Baseball Earns Doubleheader Split With UW-Stout; Vivian Hits Two Home Runs in Game Two

Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Baseball team earned a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader split with UW-Stout Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
   
Game One 
  • UW-Stout scored five runs on two hits and an error to take a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Justin Schnell provided the big hit as he hit a two out grand slam for the Blue Devils.
  • With one out in the top of the fourth inning, Logan Pye singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. Tim Urlaub then doubled to score Pye. A Jack Moran single moved Urlaub to third. Urlaub then scored on a sacrifice fly by Nate Witte to cut the Eagles deficit to 5-2. 
  • Nolan Harke would then give the Blue Devils a 6-2 lead with a solo home run in the in the sixth inning. UW-Stout would add another run in the sixth on a single by Parker Hagebock to make it 7-2.
  • Jack Olver led off the top of the seventh inning with a single and advanced to second on a single by Anthony Vivian. George Seaman then hit his third home run of the season to cut the Eagles deficit to 7-5. 
  • Mac Born would then cut the Eagles deficit to 7-6 with his seventh home run of the season in the eighth inning. 
  • In the ninth inning, the Eagles would put two guys on with one out; however, Tim Kohls (2) would retire the final two batters to earn the save for UW-Stout. 
    Game Two
  • Witte led off the game with his second home run of the season to give UWL a 1-0 lead. Chris VandenHeuvel then doubled and went to third on a double by Born. After a strikeout, Olver hit a sacrifice fly to score VandenHeuvel while Pye singled to score Born to give UWL 3-0.
  • Jack Shirpke would put the Blue Devils on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning with a two run homer.
  • Shirpke would then tie the score (3-3) for UW-Stout with an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. 
  • Jacoby Endreas would homer to give UW-Stout a 4-3 lead in the third inning.
  • UWL would regain the lead in the fourth inning as Vivian hit a solo home run while VandenHeuvel drove in a run with a single to make it 5-4.
  • UW-Stout would score two runs on three hits in the fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead. 
  • With the score still 6-5 entering the eight inning, Vivian hit his second home run of the game to tie the score at six. Brady Burrill then pinch hit and recorded a single. Burrill then stole second base before advancing to third on a ground out by Moran. Witte then walked followed by a double by VandenHeuvel which scored both Witte and Burrill to put UWL up 8-6.
  • After back-to-back errors by the Eagles in the ninth inning, UW-Stout got RBI singles from Endreas and Harke to tie the game at eight. 
  • Moran led off the 10th inning with a single and advanced to second on an error. He then advanced to third on a passed ball before Witte walked. VandenHeuvel then doubled to score Moran and move Witte to third. Emiliano Ramos, who had pinch ran for Born in the eighth inning, then hit his first home run of the season to put UWL up 12-8. 
  • Caleb Matl (3-0) would retire the Blue Devils in order in the ninth including two strikeouts to earn the win.

Game One
  • Offensively, UWL finished with six runs on 11 hits and seven walks. 
  • Seaman led the Eagles going 2-for4 with a home run, three RBI and one run scored.
  • Urlaub finished 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI and run scored.
  • Also recording multi-hit games was Pye (2-for-4) and Olver (2-for-5). 
  • Isaiah Katz (3-3) suffered the loss for the Eagles allowing five runs on two hits and a walk in 1.0 innings of work. 
  • UW-Stout finished with seven runs on seven hits and two walks.
  • Harke led the Blue Devils by going 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Lucas Lendosky (3-2) earned the win on the mound for UW-Stout by going 5.1 innings and allowing two runs on six hits and four walks while striking out four. 
      Game Two
  • Offensively, the Eagles scored 10 runs on 15 hits and six walks.
  • VandenHeuvel led the Eagles offense going 4-for-5 with a walk, four RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Recording multi-hit games was Vivian (2-for-5) and Pye (2-for-5).
  • Matl (3-0) came on in relief in the eighth inning to earn the win. In 3.0 innings of work, Matl allowed two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out five.  
  • Tim Kohls (0-1) suffered the loss for the Blue Devils as he allowed four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two. 
  • As a team, UW-Stout recorded eight runs on 13 hits and three walks.
  • Endreas led the Blue Devils by going 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
