Eagles Walk it Off in Tenth Inning With Vivian's Sacrifice Fly

Davenport, Fla.. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team came from behind to defeat William Paterson University (N.J.) Monday morning in 10th innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After two scoreless innings, William Paterson scored a run in the third and two runs in the fourth inning. Sean McAllister walked to lead off the third inning and advanced three times on three wild pitches. Then in the fourth inning, the Pioneers scored two runs on two hits to take a 3-0 lead.
  • UWL would score a run in the bottom of the fourth inning as George Seaman singled, advanced to second when Cam Dupont walked and went to third on a wild pitch. Mac Born then singled to score Seaman and move Dupont to second. 
  • The score would remain 3-1 heading into the seventh inning when Jack Olver doubled and scored on Anthony Vivian's single to make it 3-2.
  • Then in the ninth inning, the Pioneers got a run on a sacrifice fly by Connor Luckie to extend their lead to 4-2. 
  • Nate Witte was hit by a pitch to start the ninth inning and scored on a double by Olver. After Seaman walked, Tim Urlaub reached on a fielders choice and Olver scored on the play due to a throwing error to tie the game at 4-4.
  • After the Eagles put the Pioneers down in order in the top of the 10th inning, Moran led off with a double and advanced to third on a groundout. The Pioneers would then intentionally walk both Witte and Olver to load the bases with one out. Vivian then hit a sacrifice fly to left field which scored Moran for the walk off win for the Eagles.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Offensively, UWL finished with 11 hits, seven walks and three stolen bases.
  • Olver led the Eagle offense by going 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
  • Vivian, Born and Moran each finished with two hits for the Eagles. 
  • Caleb Matl (2-0) pitched a perfect 10th inning including striking out two to earn his second win of the season. Tyler Schmitt got the start and went 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out seven. Mitchel Fassbender came on in relief of Schmitt to pitch 4.0 innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks while striking out two. 
  • Nathan Rober (2-1) suffered the loss for the Pioneers as he allowed three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out one. Jose Marte started the game for the Pioneers going 5.0 innings allowing one run on six hits and three walks.
  • Ty Kobylakiewicz led the Pioneers offense by going 3-for-5 while Cabassa and McAllister each recorded two hits and drove in a run.
