Lard Finishes with Five RBI in Win over Salve Regina; UWL Drops Second Game to Eastern Connecticut State

Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team split a pair of games Thursday, earning a 9-1 victory in six innings over Salve Regina University (R.I.) before a 8-2 loss to Eastern Connecticut State University. UWL is now 6-10 on the season. 

UWL took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first versus Salve Regina (R.I.) as Cristin Casey singled with one out, stole second and third and scored on Kyra Lard's sacrifice fly. The Eagles added four runs in the second on four hits. Lindsay Steien's RBI single scored Abbey Bosch for a 2-0 lead. Casey added a run-scoring single to extend the lead to 3-0 and Lard's two-run double made it 5-0. 

Lard's two-run home run in the fourth gave UWL a 6-0 advantage. 

Salve Regina (R.I.) got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. Jacey Cosciello scored an unearned run on Hailey Basso's RBI ground out. UWL tallied two runs in the bottom of the inning on Anna Jensen's two-run double knocking in Joette Kassa and Bosch. 

UWL totaled 11 hits versus Salve Regina (R.I.). Casey went 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI while Lard finished 2-for-3 with five RBI and one run. Jensen finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Remington Stark earned the victory, going 5.0 innings, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out seven. Ashlyn Bennin pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one walk with two strikeouts.

Salve Regina (R.I.) were held to one hit by Madeleine Oswald. Sophia Gendron took the loss for the Seahawks, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing seven hits, six runs and five walks. 

Versus Eastern Connecticut State, Casey walked with one out in the top of the first, stole second and third and came in on a Warriors' throwing error. Eastern Connecticut State scored seven runs in the bottom of the second. Emma Marelli had a two-run single and Julia SanGiovanni a two-run home run. 

The Warriors added a run in the third on Maggie Rubeck's sacrifice for a 8-1 lead. 

UWL scored a run in the sixth as Brooke Howard singled and stole second. Casey followed with a walk and both runners stole a base to move into scoring position. Lard's sacrifice fly scored Howard to cut the deficit to 8-2. 

Howard had UWL's lone hit in the game. Elise Weinzierl suffered the loss, going 1.1 innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs. Carmen Follette pitched 4.2 innings, allowing four hits and one run with three strikeouts. 

Alexa Boon earned the complete-game victory for Eastern Connecticut State, going 7.0 innings, allowing on hit, two runs (one earned) and five walks with one strikeout. The Warriors had 12 hits with Marelli, SanGiovanni, Sauve and Baker each finishing with two. 

UWL wraps up its spring trip with a pair of games Friday, March 15, facing the University of Hartford (Conn.) at 9 a.m. (Mountain) and St. Catherine University (Minn.) at 11 a.m. (Mountain).
