Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team split a pair of games on Monday as it continues its spring trip. The Eagles fell, 3-1, to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (Calif.) before earning a 8-0 win in five innings over Webster University (Mo.). UWL is now 5-7 on the season.
CMS (Calif.) scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the third. Kaili Aqui reached on an error to start the inning and went to second on Destiny Garc's single. Giselle Lai then tripled to score both runners and a 2-0 lead. Madison Gonz followed with an RBI ground out to make it 3-0.
UWL cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth.
Renee Tooze walked with one out and scored an
Brooke Howard's two-out double. The Eagles got runners to the corners with one out in the top of the seventh, but the final two batters were retired.
UWL finished with four hits as Howard went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Kyra Lard and
Lauren Winkler each had one hit.
Madi Lee suffered the loss, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing three hits, three runs (two earned) and one walk with two strikeouts.
Carmen Follette went 3.0 innings while striking out three.
CMS (Calif.) totaled three hits. Maya Weigel-Murphy earned the victory, going 4.2 innings, allowing one hit, one run and three walks while striking out four. Jade Johnson picked up the save, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing three hits with two strikeouts.
Against Webster (Mo.),
Remington Stark earned the complete-game victory. He went 5.0 innings, allowing three hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Ava Jaehnke reached on a one-out error and scored on Lard's two-run home run. UWL added solo runs in the second and third innings. Howard tripled to lead-off the second and scored as
Cristin Casey reached on an error.
Lindsay Steien scored in the bottom of the third on Casey's two-out single for a 4-0 lead.
Howard's two-run single and RBI singles from Lard and
Aliyah Langrehr in the bottom of the fifth finished the scoring.
UWL totaled 12 hits with Howard going 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Casey went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI while Lard finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run. Steien scored twice.
Ainsley Hinz suffered the loss for Webster (Mo.). She pitched 0.1 of an inning, allowing two hits, two runs (one earned) and one walk. Three different players recorded a hit for the Gorlocks.
UWL returns to action Tuesday, March 12 versus Whittier College (Calif.) at 9 a.m. (Central) and Central College (Iowa) at 11 a.m. (Central).
