UWL Earns Doubleheader Sweep of UW-River Falls; Allows One Run Over Weekend

West Salem, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over UW-River Falls Sunday afternoon at West Salem High School. The Eagles took the opener, 7-1, and the nightcap, 8-0 in five innings. UWL improves to 20-11 overall and 5-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-River Falls drops to 14-14 overall and 2-4 in the conference. 

The games were moved to West Salem due to flooding at UWL's North Campus Field.

In the opener, the Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Hailey Jibben walked to start the inning and advanced to second on Megan Scheidt's sacrifice bunt. Isabel Queenan pinch-ran for Jibben and scored on Abbey Bosch double to left center for the first run of the game. After a groundout, Jordyn McCormack delivered a two-out two-run home run for a 3-0 lead. 

UWL extended its lead in the fourth on back-to-back doubles from Madi O'Brien and Jordan Schultz to make it 4-0. The Eagles added three runs in the fifth. Kyra Lard singled with one out and scored on McCormack's double for a 5-0 lead and Marissa Pease' two-run home run gave UWL a 7-0 advantage. 

UW-River Falls scored its lone run on a UWL throwing error in the top of the sixth as Kelly Aultman scored with Eleanor Hoge reaching base.

Elise Weinzierl (9-6) earned the win in Sunday's opener, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing four hits, no earned runs and one walk while striking out seven. Madi Lee pitched 1.0 inning with a pair of strikeouts. UWL finished with nine hits with McCormack going 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. Schultz went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Maggie Wallin (5-5) took the loss for UW-River Falls. She went 4.0 innings, allowing five hits, four runs and one walk while striking out four. The Falcons had four hits with Jewel Waupekenay finishing 2-for-3. 

UWL tallied five runs in the bottom of the third in Sunday's nightcap. Scheidt singled to center field to start the frame. Bosch and Lard were hit-by-pitch to load the bases. McCormack's sacrifice fly knocked in Scheidt for a 1-0 lead. Pease was hit-by-pitch and Ella Harris drew a bases-loaded walk to score Bosch to make it 2-0. O'Brien followed with a three-run double knocking in Lard, Pease and Harris to extend the lead to 5-0.

The Eagles ended the game with three runs in the fifth. Joette Kassa was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded scoring Harris for a 6-0 advantage and Maddy Bornbach delivered a two-run single knocking in Queenan and Schultz for the 8-0 win.

Remington Stark (4-1) earned the victory. She went 5.0 innings, allowing two hits and one walk with six strikeouts. UWL had six hits with O'Brien finishing 2-for-3 with three RBI. 

Savanna Trittelwitz (3-1) suffered the loss for UW-River Falls. She pitched 2.1 innings, allowing three hits, five runs and two walks with two strikeouts. Waupekenay and Maddie Koch each had a hit for the Falcons.

UWL returns to action Saturday, April 29 hosting UW-Stevens Point for Senior Day at 1 p.m.
