La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader sweep over UW-Platteville Sunday afternoon at Copeland Park. The Eagles took the opener, 12-5, and the nightcap, 16-9. UWL improves to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in the WIAC while the UW-Platteville drops to 5-10 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
The doubleheader was moved to La Crosse due to unplayable field conditions at UW-Platteville.
Logan Pye went five-for-10 in Sunday's doubleheader.
UWL took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in Sunday's opener.
Jack Moran singled to start the game and went to third on
Logan Pye's double. After a fly-out, Moran scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 with Pye advancing to third.
Ty Hamilton's RBI groundout scored Pye with the second run in the inning.
The Eagles added to their lead in the top of the third 4-0 as Hamilton singled with two outs and scored on
Jack Olver's home run. UWL extended the lead to 7-0 with three runs in the fourth.
Jordan Williams singled, stole second and went to third on Moran's single. After a pair of force outs,
Anthony Vivian delivered a three-run home run scoring Moran and
Mac Born.
George Seaman's solo home run in the top of the fifth gave UWL a 8-0 lead. UW-Platteville got on the board in the bottom of the inning. Charlie Breen and and Grant Mullins singled with one out and scored on Mitchell McLaughlin's two-run double.
Mitchel Fassbender earned his second save.
UWL scored four times on one hit and a pair of UW-Platteville errors in the top of the ninth. Vivian scored on Seaman's sacrifice fly to make it 9-2. Hamilton scored on a Pioneers' error and Williams hit a two-run home run knocking in
Tim Urlaub for a 12-2 lead.
UW-Platteville tallied three unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth. Hunter Hopkins came in on a wild pitch while Breen and Spencer Robertson scored on Justin Fago's two-run single.
Isaiah Katz (1-0) earned the win in Sunday's opener for UWL, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing five hits, two runs and one walk while striking out five.
Mitchel Fassbender picked up his second save, going 3.0 innings, allowing three hits, three unearned runs and one walk with four strikeouts.
The Eagles finished with 14 hits with Moran going 3-for-6 with two runs and Williams 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run. Pye and Hamilton finished 2-for-5 while Seaman was 2-for-3. Hamlton scored twice while Seaman had two RBI.
Brady Hoppert (2-3) suffered the loss for UW-Platteville. He went 4.0 innings, allowing 10 hits, seven runs and one walk with two strikeouts. The Pioneers totaled eight hits with Fago going 3-for-5 with two RBI and McLaughlin 2-for-5 with two RBI.
UWL got on the scoreboard early in the nightcap, scoring four runs in the top of the first. Moran walked to lead-off the game and scored on Pye's two-run home run. Born later scord on Hamilton's double play to make it 3-0 and Olver finished the scoring with a solo home run. The Eagles made it 6-0 in the top of the second with Williams scoring on a Born sacrifice fly and Moran coming in on Vivian's single.
Jack Moran scored five runs on Sunday.
Pye and Olver each hit three-run home runs in the top of the fourth to extend UWL's lead to 12-0. The Eagles had six hits in the inning.
UW-Platteville scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Breen's single scored Mason Molitor to get the Pioneers on the scoreboard and Mullins hit a grand slam to make it 12-5.
UWL responded with getting a run back in the top of the fifth on Born's RBI single to take a 13-5 lead. Hopkins' two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth for UW-Platteville cut the deficit to 13-7 and McLaughlin's solo home run in the sixth cut it to 13-8. The Eagles took a 14-8 lead in the seventh on Hamilton's single. UWL added a pair of runs in the eighth with Seaman scoring on a fielding error as
James Rae reached and
Ben LaRonge scored on a Pye single. UW-Platteville's Robertson hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to cut it to 16-9.
Tucker Bouche (2-0) earned the win for UWL, pitching 3.0 innings in relief, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out two.
Owen Deprez started, going 3.1 innings, allowing six hits, five runs and three walks with four strikeouts. The Eagles had 17 hits in the nightcap as eight starters recorded at least one. Pye went 3-for-5 with three runs, two home runs and six RBI while Olver finished 3-for-6 with two home runs and four RBI. Moran, Born, Vivian, Hamilton and Seaman each had two hits with Moran scoring three runs. Born, Olver and Williams each scored twice.
Sam Hernandez (0-1) took the loss for UW-Platteville, going 0.2 of an inning. He allowed four hits, four runs and two walks. UW-Platteville totaled 12 hits as Mullins, McLaughlin, Molitor, Mitchell Pomeroy and Breen each had two. Mullins had four RBI and Hopkins two.
The teams will play another doubleheader Monday, April 3 at Prospect Meadows in Marion, Iowa starting at noon.
