Early Lead Helps Extend Winning Streak to Five in Final Spring Break Game; Sets Season-Highs in Runs and Hits

Davenport, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team concluded its spring break trip with a 11-2 win over Kalamazoo College (Mich.) Tuesday morning at NorthEast Regional Park. The Eagles improve to 6-2 with their fifth straight victory. The Hornets drop to 5-5 on the season. 

UWL raced out to a quick 6-0 lead, scoring four runs in the top of the first and twice in the second. Jack Moran opened the game with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. He then scored the game's first run as Jack Olver reached on an error. Mac Born followed with a single and George Seaman's three-run home run gave the Eagles a 4-0 lead. 

Moran started the second inning with a single, stole second and went to third on Olver's infield single. After Olver advanced to second on a wild pitch, Born delivered a two-run single to give UWL a 6-0 lead. 

Kalamazoo (Mich.) cut the lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a Cooper Mills single and Harrison Poeszat two-run home run. 

The Eagles extended the lead with a run in the sixth. Moran started the rally with a lead-off walk. He went to third on Olver's second single of the game and Born's RBI single knocked in Moran for a 7-2 lead. 

In the eighth, UWL tallied four runs to take an 11-2 lead. Moran again started the Eagles' rally with a walk. Olver doubled to move Moran to third and Born followed with a single to score Moran and Olver. Anthony Vivian later hit a two-run home run to finish the scoring. 

Owen Deprez earned the victory for UWL, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing three hits, two runs and two walks with 11 strikeouts. Tyler Schmitt pitched 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts. Preston Piranio went the final inning, allowing one walk with one strikeout. 

The Eagles had 14 hits in the game as Born finished 4-for-5 with five RBI and one run and Olver going 4-for-6 with three runs. Moran was 2-for-3 with four runs and three walks. Seaman finished 2-for-3 with three RBI. 

Charlie Peterson suffered the loss for Kalamazoo (Mich.), allowing three hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks while not recording an out. The Hornets were held to four hits with Mills finishing 2-for-3 with a run.

UWL returns to action Saturday, March 25 hosting UW-Stout in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener for both teams. The first game of the doubleheader starts at noon at Copeland Park.
