Second Half Rally Falls Short at Wisconsin Lutheran; Three Finish in Double Figures

Milwaukee, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell, 84-72, at Wisconsin Lutheran College Saturday night in Time of Grace Center. The Eagles drop to 5-5 on the season while the Warriors improve to 7-1. 

In the first meeting between the teams since the 2010-11 season, UWL took a 7-6 lead with 16:33 left on a Will Fuhrmann jumper. Wisconsin Lutheran took a 8-7 lead on a Grayson Goetz jumper as the Warriors used a 11-0 run to take a 17-7 lead with 13:50 remaining. Tarek Abdel Kireem's layup for the Eagles cut the deficit to 19-16 with 10:25 left. 

UWL later tied the game at 22-22 with 6:50 remaining on a Abdel Kireem jumper. Mack Sebert's layup with 4:47 left in the first half gave UWL a 28-26 advantage. The Eagles took a 35-32 lead with :35 remaining on a Fuhrmann jumper, but Jacob Stoltz' three-pointer at the buzzer tied the game, 35-35, at halftime.

Jake Gross' free throw with 13:10 left in the game gave UWL a 47-46 lead, but Wisconsin Lutheran went on a 8-0 run to take a 54-47 lead on Ryan Broeckel's three-point play. The Warriors extended their lead to 65-50 with 8:56 left on a Broeckel layup, but a 11-2 run by the Eagles cut the lead to 67-61 with 6:40 remaining after a Sebert three-point field goal. Sebert connected on three straight three-pointers in the run for UWL.  

Noah Howard's three-point field goal for Wisconsin Lutheran made it 70-61 with 6:25 left and UWL could get no closer than eight points the rest of the game.

UWL shot 45.8% from the field Saturday, including 38.5% (10-of-26) from three-point range, and 53.3% (eight-of-15) at the free throw line. Sebert led the Eagles with 19 points, going seven-of-10 from the field, including five-of-eight from three-point range. Abdel Kireem finished with 14 points and Gross added 13 for UWL. Gross finished nine rebounds and three assists. Fuhrmann totaled nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds. 

Wisconsin Lutheran shot 47.6% from the field, including 37.5% (six-of-16) from three-point range, and 81.8% (18-of-22) at the line. Broeckel led the Warriors with 27 points and 16 rebounds while Goetz totaled 21 points and five assists. Stoltz added 13 points and five assists. 

UWL returns to action Wednesday, December 13 at Saint Mary's University (Minn.) at 7 p.m.
