La Crosse, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's swimming & diving team opened its 2023-24 home season with a 188.5-11.5 loss to UW-Eau Claire Saturday in the Richard L. Pein Natatorium.
The Eagles won the 400 freestyle relay with
Blake Nelson,
Jesse Hammes,
Connor Cleveland and
Will Quackenbush (3:10.96) while the 200 medley relay of Hammes,
Ben Collins,
Jacob Ketterling and
Tyler Hartmann was second (1:35.63).
Nelson and Hammes each won individual titles with Nelson taking the 50 freestyle (21.53) and Hammes the 100 freestyle (48.07).
Jonah Elfers tied for first in the 100 butterfly (52.46). Hammes also placed second (54.09) and Elfers third (55.49) in the 100 backstroke.
Collins and Quackenbush each recorded a pair of second-place showings with Collins in the 100 (59.65) and 200 (2:13.91) breaststroke and Quackenbush in the 100 (48.42) and 200 (1:48.00) freestyle.
Ketterling had three top-four finishes on Saturday, including second in the 200 backstroke (1:59.08) and third in the 200 I.M. (2:02.25) and fourth in the 100 butterfly (53.15).
Tyler Hartmann was third (21.86) in the 50 freestyle,
Drew Shipley third in the 500 freestyle (5:05.79), Cleveland fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:50.45) and
Davin Evans fourth in the 1,000 freestyle (10:50.01). Evans was also third in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.55).
Caleb Jondle placed third (2:02.05) and
Zach Vinson fourth (2:06.25) in the 200 butterfly.

In Saturday's diving competition,
Tyler Herder was third in the one (220.95 points) and three-meter (210.75) meter while
Aanav Patel finished fourth in the one (176.00) and three (169.25) meter.
