Ripon, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team earned its first road win of the season with a 78-68 victory at Ripon College (Wis.) Tuesday night in Doc Weiske '50 Memorial Gymnasium. The Eagles improve to 2-2 on the season while the Red Hawks drop to 1-4.
Ripon (Wis.) took a 6-3 lead when UWL went on a 11-0 run to make it 14-6 with 14:11 left in the first half on a
Dustin Derousseau layup. The Red Hawks cut the lead to 16-10, but five straight points by the Eagles extended UWL's lead to 21-10. Ripon (Wis.) scored the next seven points to cut the lead to 21-17 with 10:29 remaining in the first half. UWL used a 7-0 run of its own to make it 28-17 with 7:38 left on
Austin Westra's layup.
UWL took its largest lead of the first half at 38-26 with 1:12 remaining on a Westra layup before Ripon (Wis.) ended the half on a 8-0 run to cut its halftime deficit to 38-34.
UWL earned its first road win of the season Tuesday night.
William Ryan's jumper for Ripon (Wis.) cut the lead to 40-39, but Westra, Derousseau and
JJ Paider each hit layups to make it 46-39. Trailing 53-48 with 10:54 remaining, the Red Hawks went on a 6-0 run to take a 54-53 advantage with 10:00 left on a Dominic Galati three-pointer.
Khris Green's three-point field goal with 8:35 left gave UWL a 58-56 lead and the Eagles would not trail the rest of the game. Galati's free throw with 4:02 remaining cut the deficit to 64-60 before Fuhrmann connected on a three-pointer and Westra on a jumper to make it 69-60. Ripon (Wis.) could get no closer than four points the rest of the game.
UWL shot 50.9% from the field, including 30.4% (seven-of-23) from three-point range, and 65.0% (13-of-20) at the free throw line. Westra recorded a double-double with 29 points and 12 rebounds. He finished 11-of-15 from the field, including two-of-five from three-point range, and five-of-seven at the line. Fuhrmann finished with 17 points and six assists while Derousseau totaled 12 points, three blocks and three steals. Green added 10 points.
Ripon (Wis.) shot 43.3% from the field, including 40.9% (nine-of-22) from three-point range, and 58.3% (seven-of-12) at the line. Cade Tackmier and Galati led the Red Hawks with 13 points. Luke Meinholz and Jayden Fitch each added 12 points. Fitch had a team-high seven rebounds.
UWL returns to action Saturday, November 27 hosting Wartburg College (Iowa) at 7:30 p.m. in Mitchell Hall.
