St. Peter, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's tennis team completed action Saturday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships and Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) Fall Invitational. No team scores were recorded.
At the ITA Midwest Regional Championships,
Kellie Hierl and
Katie Kearney each went 1-1 in singles play while
Ani Bulbulian and
Susi Hu dropped their only match.
In doubles, Hierl/Kearney finished 2-1 with Hu/Bulbulian going 1-1.
In the Gustavus Fall Invitational,
Emma Heinert captured the #6 singles draw with a 4-0 record. She opened the tournament defeating Natalie Neff of Luther College, Iowa (8-2) before beating Emily Henderson of Saint Mary's University, Minn. (8-5) in the quarterfinals. Heinert beat Brooke Beiers of The College of St. Benedict, Minn. (8-2) in the semifinals and captured the title defeating Sarah Ferguson of UW-Whitewater (6-4, 6-3).
UWL's
Izzy Schmiesing and
Kate Townsend won the No. 1 doubles draw in the Gustavus Fall Invitational with a 4-0 mark. The duo defeated Kiley Nolan/Montse Ramirez of Luther, Iowa (6-2) in their first match before beating Maddie Packer/Mary Enright of Gustavus Adolphus, Minn. (6-2). Schmiesing/Townsend beat Beiers/Kira Young of St. Benedict, Minn. (6-3) in the semifinals and won the crown defeating Eric Wing/Anna Luksik of St. Benedict, Minn. (6-4) in the title match.
In other singles play in the Gustavus Fall Invitational, Townsend went 2-1 in the No. 4 draw while Schmiesing finished 1-1 at No. 7. Townsend advanced to the semifinals, defeating Annie Orvis of the University of Northwestern, Minn. (8-4) in the first round and Evelyn Taylor of Edgewood College, Wis. (8-3) in the quarterfinals. She dropped her semifinal match to Lexi Hastings of Luther, Iowa (8-7).
Megan Stanaszak (No. 1 singles draw) and Annabelle Gainizamanov (#5) lost their only match while
Avery Nicholson went 0-2 at No. 3.
Heinert/Nicholson finished 2-1 in the No. 3 doubles draw while Gainizamanov/Stanaszak went 0-2 at No. 2 doubles.
UWL returns to action Sunday, October 2 hosting UW-Stout at noon at Green Island Tennis Park.
