Box Score Thousand Oaks, Calif. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team, ranked 13th on the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top-25 Poll for NCAA Division III, earned a 1-0 win at California Lutheran University Thursday night at William Rolland Stadium in the season opener for both teams.
In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, UWL scored the game's only goal at 6:32 with
Maggie Hernandez notching the goal off an
Ellie Arndt assist. The goal came on UWL's first shot of the game. The Eagles recorded five shots in the first 45:00 of the game while Regals had nine. UWL had the only two corner kicks in the first half.
UWL was held without a shot in the final 11:48 of the game as it finished with three in the second half. California Lutheran had five shots in the second half, including its final shot at 86:51 by Brynn McMahon which was wide left.
Sophia Anger recorded the shutout in goal for UWL, finishing with five saves. Kelsey Slaugh had four saves for California Lutheran.
Both teams had two corner kicks in the second half. The game featured 25 fouls, including five yellow cards (four from California Lutheran).
Six players recorded a shot for UWL with
Ainsley Allan and
Ellie Behnke each finishing with two. Allan had both of her shots on goal while Behnke had one. The Eagles had eight shots overall. California Lutheran totaled 14 shots as Isabella Veljacic and Ryan Kaneko each had three. Both players had one shot on goal.
