La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader with UW-Oshkosh Sunday afternoon at Copeland Park. UWL took the first game, 13-10, and UW-Oshkosh came back to take the nightcap, 4-2. The Eagles are now 18-14 overall and 12-10 in the WIAC while the Titans are 20-11 overall and 14-6 in the conference.
Jonathan Wizner went 4-for-8 with three doubles in the doubleheader.
UWL snapped UW-Oshkosh's nine-game winning streak in the opener.
UW-Oshkosh would start the first game strong, as Nicholas Shiu's home run in the top of the first inning scored Matt Scherrman and Jake Surane, giving the Titans a 3-0 lead. The Titans would continue the hot start, scoring two runs in the top of the second on a double from Surane and a sacrifice fly from Scherrman. UW-Oshkosh would take its largest lead of the game in the top of the third, going up 7-0 on Surane's two-RBI single.
UWL started a run of its own in the bottom of the third, as Jack Olver's double to center field brought in Mac Born and Jordan Williams to put the Eagles on the board. Tim Urlaub's single scored Olver to bring the score to 7-3. Williams added to the run in the bottom of the fourth with a single that drove in Jonathan Wizner.
A big fifth inning would put the Eagles ahead for the first time, starting with an Urlaub single that left Olver on third. Roesler and Wizner hit back-to-back RBI singles to cut the lead to 7-6 and George Seaman's fielder's choice scored Roesler to tie the game. Seaman later scored on a Titans' fielding error to give the Eagles an 8-7 lead. Tommy Nelsen's two-RBI single scored Zach Carney and Williams to put UWL ahead 10-7.
Caleb Matl went 3.0 innings in earning the win in the opener.
UW-Oshkosh cut the lead to 10-8 in the top of the sixth inning on Ethan Schreier's fielder's choice scored Zach Taylor. Scherrman's two-run single in the top of the seventh drove in Suraane and Eric Madoff to even the score at 10-10. Caleb Matl relieved Sawyer Phillips to get the Eagles out of the inning.
Williams' double in the bottom of the seventh, followed by a Carney walked, set up Born's RBI single to give UWL a 11-10 lead. Olver's two-RBI double made it 13-10. Matl struck out three batters in the last two innings.
Both teams registered 18 hits and the Eagles were led by Olver going 3-for-5 with four RBI, two doubles and two runs. Williams went 3-for-4, including two doubles, and scored three runs with an RBI. Wizner added an RBI, one run, and two doubles while going 3-for-5. Born was also 3-for-5 with an RBI.
Surane and Shui led UW-Oshkosh, each going 3-for-5 with three RBI and one run. Scherrman had three RBI on 2-of-5 hitting while Schreier finished 2-for-5.
Matl (3-3) was the winning pitcher, allowing no runs on three hits with four strikeouts in 3.0 innings. Matt Sorrells (1-1) suffered the loss for UW-Oshkosh, allowing four runs, four hits and two walks in 2.0 innings.
In the nightcap, UWL took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Carney reached first on a UW-Oshkosh throwing error, advanced to third on Nelsen's single and scored on Born's sacrifice fly. After two scoreless innings, Wizner led off the bottom of the fourth with a double and scored on Seaman's RBI single making it 2-0.
Jordan Williams had five hits with three runs in the doubleheader.
UW-Oshkosh answered in the top of the fifth with a two-run home run by Jake Anderson to even the score. Mason Kirchberg hit a two-run home run of his own in the top of the seventh to put the Titans up for good, 4-2. UWL would get runners on in each of the last three innings, but were unable to capitalize.
Olver went 3-for-5 in the nightcap while Williams finished 2-for-4. Nelsen's single extended his hitting streak to 17 games. Surane went 2-for-4 for UW-Oshkosh.
Will Michalski (5-0) earned the complete-game win, allowing 10 hits, two runs (one earned) and one walk with one strikeout in 9.0 innings. Alex Mach (3-1) also suffered the loss, also pitching a complete-game. He went 9.0 innings, allowing four runs, seven hits and one walk with eight strikeouts.
UWL continues the series with UW-Oshkosh Monday, May 2 at Copeland Park with the first game starting at noon.
