La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team, receiving votes in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 Poll, extended its winning streak to nine with a doubleheader sweep of UW-Platteville Wednesday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Eagles took the opener, 2-0, and the nightcap, 4-2.
UWL improves to 21-8 overall and 9-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Platteville drops to 12-16 overall and 4-6 in the conference. UWL's nine-game winning streak is its longest since nine straight victories in 2013. The nine-game winning streak is tied for the fifth-longest in school history. The Eagles won a school record 21 consecutive games in 2010.
Hailey Pitzl went 1-for-3 with an RBI in the opener.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third in Wednesday's opener as
Jordyn McCormack singled with two outs, stole second and scored on
Kendra Leis' single. UWL made it 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth.
Ellie Yaeger singled to start the inning and replaced by pinch-runner
Emily Lyman.
Anna Jensen's sacrifice bunt advanced Lyman to second with one out.
Hailey Pitzl followed with an RBI single to knock in Lyman.
Elise Weinzierl (9-2) earned the complete-game win in the opener, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out two. UWL totaled eight hits with Yaeger going 2-for-3.
Claire Bakkestuen (4-6) suffered the loss for the Pioneers. She went 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits and two runs with five strikeouts. UW-Platteville did not advance a runner past second base in the game. Four different players recorded a hit.
UWL took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the nightcap as
Kyra Lard walked to start the game and scored on McCormack's two-run home run. UW-Platteville tied the game in the top of the third as Rachel Plautz singled and came in on Bakkestuen's two-run home run.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth. McCormack singled with one out and scored on a Leis' double to give UWL a 3-2 advantage. Lyman pinch ran for Leis and scored on a UW-Platteville error after
Hailey Jibben's single to make it 4-2.
Kendra Leis had two hits and two RBI in the doubleheader.
Remington Stark (7-2) earned the victory for UWL, going 2.0 innings in relief, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two. Weinzierl picked up her second save, pitching 2.0 innings. She allowed one hit with two strikeouts.
Madi Lee started, pitching 3.0 innings. She allowed four hits, two runs and one walk while striking out seven. The Eagles had nine hits as McCormack went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Yaeger finished 3-for-3 while Jibben went 2-for-3.
Jordan Johnson (6-2) took the loss for UW-Platteville, going 4.1 inning, allowing eight hits, four runs and one walk. The Pioneers finished with six hits as Plautz went 2-for-4 with one run.
UWL returns to action Friday, April 29 at UW-River Falls with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
