St. Peter, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a 6-4 non-conference win at Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) Wednesday afternoon at Gustie Baseball Field. The Eagles improve to 17-13 on the season while the Golden Gusties drop to 22-7.
In the first meeting between the two teams since 2010, UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on
Mac Born's 11th home run of the season. The 11 home runs moves him into a tie for third in single-season school history with Chester Janke (2002).
Justin Anderson is second with 12 home runs in 2016 while
Vinnie Rottino holds the school record with 15 in 2002.
Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) scored a pair of runs in the second and third to take a 4-1 lead. In the second, Ethan Mocchi singled to start the inning and scored on Drake Siens' triple to tie the game at 1-1. Nick Azar followed with an infield single to knock in Siens with the go-ahead run. Jack Hanson's one-out home run in the bottom of the third gave the Golden Gusties a 3-1 lead. Gavin Baker followed with a double and scored on Siens' one-out double for a 4-1 advantage.
Tim Urlaub had two RBI in the win.
UWL took a 6-4 lead with five runs in the top of the seventh.
George Seaman reached on a Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) error to start the inning.
Ben LaRonge was hit-by-pitch and
Zach Carney walked to load the bases.
Tommy Nelsen's two-run single scored Seaman and LaRonge to cut the Golden Gusties' lead to 4-3.
Jack Olver's sacrifice fly scored Carney to tie the game. After a Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) pitching change,
Tim Urlaub delivered a two-run double scoring Nelsen and Born to give the Eagles a 6-4 lead.
Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) got a pair of one-out walks in the bottom of the eighth, but UWL's
Caleb Matl got a groundout and strikeout to end the inning. He retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth, including a pair of strikeouts.
Alex Redman (3-3) earned the win for UWL, pitching 6.0 innings. He allowed eight hits, four runs and one walk while striking out five. Matl picked up his third save, going 1.2 innings with three strikeouts.
The Eagles had seven hits in the game with Nelsen finishing 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run. Born scored twice while Urlaub had two RBI.
Christian Johnson (3-4) suffered the loss for Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.), going 6.1 innings. He allowed four hits, six runs (five earned) and two walks with two strikeouts.
The Golden Gusties had nine hits. Hanson, Baker, Siens and Azar each had two hits for Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) with Siens finishing with two RBI.
UWL returns to action Saturday, April 30 hosting UW-Oshkosh in a doubleheader at noon at Copeland Park.
