UWL Earns Non-Conference Win over Saint Mary's

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team extended its winning streak to six with a 6-1 non-conference victory over Saint Mary's University (Minn.) Tuesday afternoon at Copeland Park. The Eagles improve to 9-4 on the season while the Cardinals fall to 8-9. 

UWL took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second Tuesday. Zach Carney singled with one out, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. After Colton Schraepfer walked, Anthony Vivian's sacrifice bunt scored Carney with the game's first run. Logan Pye followed with a two-run double, knocking in Schraepfer and Vivan for a 3-0 lead. Ben LaRonge later scored on Jonathan Wizner's two-out single.

The Eagles added to their lead with single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-0 lead. Schraepfer doubled to lead-off the fourth and came in on LaRonge's two-out RBI single.  Jack Olver doubled with one out in the fifth inning, stole third and scored on a wild pitch as Jack Kelly drew a walk. 

Saint Mary's (Minn.), held without a hit until Brandon Merfeld's two-out single in the fifth, got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. Cameron Weber doubled to start the inning and later scored on Jake Mercado's two-out single to cut it to 6-1. The Cardinals left 14 runners on base in the game, including the bases-loaded in the seventh and two runners in the first, fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth. Saint Mary's (Minn.) finished 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position.

Jacob Bryant (1-1) earned the win for UWL, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing four hits, one run and one walk while striking out seven. Mitchel Fassbender picked up his first save, going 3.0 innings, allowing four hits and two walks with six strikeouts.  Six different players had a hit for the Eagles. Schraepfer scored twice while Pye had two RBI.  

Addison Hochevar (1-2) suffered the loss for Saint Mary's (Minn.), going 4.0 innings, allowing five hits, five runs (four earned) and two walks with four strikeouts.  Eight different players recorded a hit for the Cardinals.

UWL returns to action Saturday, April 2 hosting UW-Platteville in a doubleheader at noon.
