UWL Opens Season with Win over Beloit

Auburndale, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team opened its 2022 season with a 7-2 win over Beloit College (Wis.) Tuesday afternoon.  The Bucs drop to 2-3 on the season. 

Beloit (Wis.) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on Garrison Ferone's RBI double scoring AJ Fitzpatrick.  UWL scored six times in the bottom of the fifth. Connor Roesler singled to start the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tommy Nelsen followed with a run-scoring single to knock in Roesler to tie the game at 1-1. Zach Carney followed with a single. After a groundout moved the runners to second and third, Mac Born's sacrifice fly scored Nelsen with the go-ahead run. 

Jack Olver followed with an RBI single to score Carney for a 3-1 lead. After a Beloit (Wis.) pitching change, Anthony Vivian hit a three-run home run to make it 6-1. 

The Eagles added one run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-1 lead with Carney coming in on Jonathan Wizner's single. 

The Bucs cut it to 7-2 in the eighth with an unearned run. Matt Crandall scored on an Eagles' throwing error. Beloit (Wis.) left the bases-loaded in the seventh and ninth innings. 

UWL had 12 hits in the game with Carney going 3-for-5 with two runs. Nelsen, Olver and Vivian each had two hits with Vivian finishing with three RBI. Chris Seveska earned the win, going 3.0 innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Brady Schmitt started for the Eagles, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing four hits, one run and one walk with four strikeouts. Alex Redman and Jacob Bryan each pitched 1.0 inning. Redman allowed one unearned run and one walk with one strikeout while Bryant allowed one hit with one walk. 

UWL returns to action Wednesday, March 16 versus Ithaca College (N.Y.) at 8 a.m. (Central) in Winter Haven, Florida.
