UWL Extends Season-Opening Win Streak to Nine with Victory at Luther

Decorah, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, ranked third on D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, improved to 9-0 with a 70-41 win at Luther College (Iowa) Wednesday night in Regents Center Gymnasium. The Norse drops to 1-7 on the season. 

UWL now leads the all-time series, 39-23, with Luther (Iowa). 

The Eagles never trailed Wednesday night, scoring the first six points of the game. The Norse cut it to 6-4, but would get no closer the rest of the game. UWL scored the next six points after layups from Austin Westra and Craig Steele and an Ethan Anderson jumper to make it 12-4. After Mitchell Schmieder hit a free throw for Luther (Iowa) to cut it to 12-5, Jake Gross and Henry Noone had back-to-back three-pointers for UWL to make it 18-5. Will Fuhrmann's layup gave the Eagles a 20-5 advantage with 11:40 left in the first half. 

UWL took its largest lead of the first half at 35-14 with 3:04 remaining on Westra's layup. The Eagles led, 35-17, at halftime.

The Eagles went on a 10-2 run to start the second half to take a 45-19 lead. The Norse could get no closer than 22 points the rest of the game. UWL led by as many as 30 points in the second half.

UWL shot 48.2% from the field, including 47.4% (nine-of-19) from three-point range, and 87.5% (seven-of-eight) at the free throw line. Anderson led the Eagles with 18 points, going nine-of-13 from the field, including two-of-two three-point range. He was one-of-two at the line and had a team-high six rebounds. Mack Sebert finished with 12 points, going four-of-five from three-point range. Westra and Fuhrmann each had eight points. 

Luther (Iowa) shot 32.6% from the field, including 18.2% (four-of-22) from three-point range, and 53.8% (seven-of-13) at the line. Mat Rohden and Eros Carpio led the Norse with seven points each. Mikkel Schutte had a game-high seven rebounds.

UWL returns to action Saturday, December 10 hosting Trine University (Ind.) at 3 p.m. on Alumni Day.
