Rally Falls Short in Second Half in Home Loss to Saint Mary's

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team, ranked seventh on D3hoops.com, fell 73-66 to Saint Mary's University (Minn.) Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles drop to 9-2 on the season while the Cardinals improve to 3-5.

UWL took a 15-12 lead after a Austin Westra layup with 12:01 remaining in the first half. Cameron Mallory's three-pointer with 10:04 left gave Saint Mary's (Minn.) a 19-17 lead, but Westra's layup tied the game with a layup with 9:37 remaining. The Cardinals went on a 7-0 run to take a 26-19 lead with 7:49 left on Noah Frechette's layup. The Eagles cut the lead to 28-26 with 3:23 remaining on Mack Sebert's three-pointer. Saint Mary's (Minn.) took a 32-28 halftime lead.  

The Cardinals opened the second half on a 10-3 run to take a 42-31 lead with 17:32 remaining on Breyton Buysman's jumper. Nick Falls' layup with 10:49 left gave Saint Mary's (Minn.) a 52-41 advantage. UWL used a 10-3 run to cut the lead to 55-51 on Henry Noone's three-point field goal with 7:13 left. It was Noone's fourth three-pointer of the half. Westra's jumper with 6:18 remaining later cut the deficit to 57-53, but Buysman's three-pointer and Raheem Anthony's jumper gave Saint Mary's (Minn.) a 62-53 lead with 5:25 left. 

Ethan Anderson's layup with 4:27 remaining cut the lead to 62-57, but UWL could get no closer the rest of the game. Buysman made a three-pointer and Anthony a dunk to make it 67-57. 

UWL shot 46.6% from the field, including 30.4% (seven-of-23) from three-point range, and 50.0% (five-of-10) at the free throw line. Westra led the Eagles with 23 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. Noone totaled 15 points, all coming in the second half, going five-of-eight from three-point range. Sebert added nine points and Will Fuhrmann seven.

Saint Mary's (Minn.) shot 49.2% from the field, including 37.5% (nine-of-24) from three-point range, and 44.4% (four-of-nine) at the line. Buysman led the Cardinals wiht 23 points while Anthony finished with 14 and Sawyer 12. Anthony had a team-high seven rebounds and four assists. Buysman, Sawyer and Frechette each had six rebounds. Sawyer also had four assists. 

UWL returns to action Thursday, December 22 at Augustana College (Ill.) at 7 p.m.
