La Crosse, Wis. - Jim Lund, an owner of Crescent Printing Company, in Onalaska, has been named the recipient of the 2022 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tom Butler Award. Lund will be presented with the award during halftime of UW-La Crosse's home football game versus UW-Platteville on Saturday, November 12. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.
Lund, a native of Onalaska, will also serve as an honorary captain for Saturday's game.
Jim Lund has been taking photos at UWL since the mid-1970's.
The Tom Butler Award has been presented annually since 1998 to a representative of the print or electronic media for outstanding coverage of WIAC athletics (former WIAC sports information directors may also be considered). The league's sports information directors select the winner. The award is dedicated to Tom Butler, who served the conference faithfully as its sports information director from 1967-96.
Fans who have ever attended a UWL sporting event have seen Lund on the sidelines with his camera. He has provided photography for all 21 of UWL's intercollegiate athletic varsity teams as well as providing graphic assistance with the Eagles' schedule cards and each home football program cover. Along with taking images for UWL, Lund provides photos for the opposing team.
Lund's interest in photography came after hiring UWL alum Dave Christianson at Crescent Printing. Christianson designed the current Eagle L logo and was an audio/visual minor who had an interest in photography. Lund says Christianson was instrumental in tutoring him and providing advice on photography.
Lund started shooting photos at UWL football game in the mid-1970's, all black and white photography. He expanded his photography to other UWL sports and later switched to digital production. Lund says his favorite level of sport is NCAA Division III. "The hard work and passion of the athletes and coaching staff is inspiring," adds Lund. "It's been a pleasure to shoot for UWL and that continues to this day," says Lund.
A 1963 graduate of Onalaska High School, Lund played on the Hilltoppers' tennis team his senior year. He attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Serving as a combat field medic with the 1st Infantry Division in the Delta, Lund was in Vietnam in 1968-69. He returned home in the spring of 1969, joining the family business at Crescent Printing, located at that time in La Crosse. In the fall of 1969, Lund designed and printed the first football game program for UWL Athletic Director Bill Vickroy.
Lund and Roger Bjorge, an owner and president of Crescent Printing Company, received the UWL Donald Gordon Merit Award in 2005.
