UWL Drops Four-Set Match at UW-Oshkosh

Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team fell 3-1 (16-25, 25-22, 21-25, 20-25) at 21st-ranked UW-Oshkosh Wednesday night in Kolf Sports Center. The Eagles drop to 8-10 overall and 1-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Titans improve to 19-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference. 

UW-Oshkosh led, 3-2, when it used a 7-2 run to take a 10-4 advantage in the opening set. The Eagles cut it to 11-6 on a Reese Yocum kill, but three straight points gave the Titans a 14-6 lead. UWL could get no closer than six points the rest of the set.

The second set was tied, 9-9, when UWL went on a 3-0 run for a 12-9 lead. Brianne Korducki and Anna Rossner each had kills for the Eagles. UWL took a 15-12 lead on a Korducki kill, but three consecutive points for UW-Oshkosh forced a 15-15 tie. A Paige Geiser kills and Sydney Fedderly ace gave UWL a 17-15 lead, but another 3-0 run by UW-Oshkosh gave the Titans a 18-17 lead. The Eagles responded with three straight points to take a 20-18 lead and UWL would never trail the rest of the set. The Titans cut it to 23-22, but kills from Gabrialla Johnson and Geiser closed the set for the Eagles.  

UW-Oshkosh, ranked 21st on the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll, raced out to a 5-1 start in the third set, but UWL scored the next four points to force a 5-5 tie. The Eagles took a 9-7 lead on a Jackie Oetterer ace and later led, 13-10, after a Titans' hitting error. UW-Oshkosh went on a 6-1 run to take a 16-14 lead on a Olivia Breunig kill. After a Johnson kill and hitting error by UW-Oshkosh tied the set, 16-16. Carissa Sundholm had a pair of kills and Breunig a block to give the Titans a 19-16 advantage. UWL cut the lead to 22-20, but UW-Oshkosh scored three of the four points to secure the set. 

In the fourth set, UWL tied it at 5-5, but a 4-0 run by UW-Oshkosh gave the Titans a 9-5 lead. The Eagles later cut the lead to 13-12 after a 4-1 run, but the Titans scored seven of the next eight points to take a 20-13 lead. Trailing 23-15, UWL went on a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to 24-20 after back-to-back kills from Rossner and Johnson. Joslyn Wolff's kill gave UW-Oshkosh the four set victory. 

Johnson led UWL with 16 kills on Wednesday, hitting .263 (16-6-38). Rossner finished with seven kills while Korducki and Madison Weisenel each had six. Yocum and Geiser had five kills with Geiser hitting .357 (5-0-14). Megan Adams recorded 28 assists as the Eagles hit .096 (46-30-167). 

Korducki finished with 21 digs with Summer Schwenn recording 20 and Fedderly 15. 

Sundholm led UW-Oshkosh with 23 kills, hitting .392 (23-3-51). Riley Kindt had 11 kills. Kalli Mau finished with 29 assists and Izzy Coon 24 as the Titans hit .222 (59-21-171). 

Abby Fregien had a team-high 29 digs with Sundholm finishing with 19, Coon 11 and Amelia Hust 10. 

UWL returns to action Friday, October 7 at Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.) at 7 p.m.
