Box Score Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end with 76-72 loss at fifth-ranked UW-Platteville Wednesday night on Bo Ryan Court. The Eagles, ranked 10th on D3hoops.com, drop to 15-3 overall and 6-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pioneers, ranked fifth on D3hoops.com, improve to 18-1 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
The Eagles suffered their first road loss of the season Wednesday, dropping to 10-1. UW-Platteville earned a 73-67 win at UWL on December 1 in the team's first meeting of the season.Â
UWL scored the first five points of the game on Wednesday. Â After the Pioneers cut the lead to 7-5 with 15:22 left on a Ben Probst three-pointer, the Eagles went on a 11-0 run to lead 18-5 on
Craig Steele's three-point basket. UWL took its largest lead of the game at 21-7 with 10:13 left on another Steele three-pointer.Â
Seth Anderson's jumper with 7:57 remaining gave UWL a 25-12 advantage, but UW-Platteville used a 11-3 run to cut the lead to 28-23 with 4:32 left on Quentin Shields' three-pointer.Â
The Pioneers cut it to 32-28 before the Eagles took a 36-30 halftime advantage.Â
Seth Anderson had 12 points Wednesday night.
UWL took a 40-32 lead on
Wyatt Cook's layup, but UW-Platteville went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 40-39 on a pair of Kyle Tuma free throws with 14:42 left. The Pioneers took their first lead of the game at 47-45 on Shields' two free throws with 11:36 remaining. Shields' three-pointer with 10:03 left gave UW-Platteville its biggest lead at 55-47 after a 10-2 run.Â
Trailing 59-53, UWL went on a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 61-60 on
Ethan Anderson's three-point basket with 5:00 left. Tuma's layup gave UW-Platteville a 67-64 lead with 3:17 remaining before
Austin Westra connected on a pair of free throws with 2:35 left to make it 67-66. Cook's two free throws gave UWL a 68-67 lead with 2:08 remaining, but Probst gave UW-Platteville the lead on a layup with 1:30 left after securing an offensive rebound. Probst hit a three-pointer with :54 remaining to give the Pioneers a 72-68 advantage.Â
Sean Suchomel's layup cut the advantage to 72-70 with :45 left for UWL. Shields made a pair of shots at the charity stripe with :19 remaining for a four-point lead, but
Ethan Anderson's layup cut it to 74-72 with :01 left. Justin Stovall's two free throws with :01 provided the final margin.Â
UWL shot 45.5% from the field Wednesday, including 23.1% (three-of-13) from three-point range, and 82.6% (19-of-23) at the line.
Ethan Anderson led the Eagles with 18 points while adding six rebounds. Cook finished with 16 points and team-high seven rebounds while
Seth Anderson totaled 12 points.Â
UW-Platteville shot 37.9% from the field, including 29.6% (eight-of-27) from three-point range, and 82.8% (24-of-29) at the line. Shields led the Pioneers with 32 points, going 11-of-12 at the free throw line. Probst finished with 20 points and seven rebounds while Tuma totaled 16 points. Stovall had a game-high 12 rebounds.Â
UWL returns to action Saturday, January 29 hosting Bethel University (Minn.) at 3 p.m.Â
