UWL Earns Road Win over UW-Eau Claire; Extends Win Streak to Six

Box Score Eau Claire, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team, ranked 11th on D3hoops.com, improved to 13-2 overall and 4-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) with a 67-60 victory at UW-Eau Claire Saturday night in Zorn Arena. UW-Eau Claire drops to 8-9 overall and 1-5 in the conference. 

The Blugolds took a 4-2 lead on Carter Brooks' layup, but the Eagles went on a 7-0 run to lead 9-4 after Sean Suchomel delivered a layup with 16:25 remaining in the first half. UWL took a 12-6 lead on Wyatt Cook's three-point field goal before UW-Eau Claire used a 9-4 run to cut the lead to 16-15 with 11:52 left. Cook's three-pointer and Torin Hannah's layup gave UWL a 21-15 advantage.

UW-Eau Claire later cut the deficit to 29-28 with 2:46 remaining on Drew Maloney's three-point play, but UWL ended the half scoring the final six points to take a 35-28 halftime lead. Will Fuhrmann had four of the Eagles' six points. 

Brock Voigt's three-point play gave UW-Eau Claire a 39-38 lead with 13:51 remaining. Ethan Anderson's two free throws and Henry Noone's three-point basket, gave UWL a 43-39 advantage with 12:23 left. The Blugolds took a 46-45 lead with 8:09 remaining after a pair of free throws from Michael Casper.  Fuhrmann's layup gave UWL a 47-46 lead and the Eagles would not trail the rest of the game. 

A pair of free throws from Cade Hall for the Blugolds cut the deficit to 51-48 with 5:25 left when the Eagles went on a 7-0 run to lead 58-48. UW-Eau Claire cut it to 60-55 with :52 remaining, but Hannah's dunk with :46 left provided a seven-point lead for UWL. UW-Eau Claire could get no closer the rest of the game.

UWL, winners of six straight, shot 45.3% from the field Saturday, including 27.8% (five-of-18) from three-point range. The Eagles shot 77.8% (14-of-18) at the line. Ethan Anderson led UWL with 22 points while Cook and Fuhrmann each finished with 12. Hannah totaled nine points. Cook and Suchomel led UWL with eight rebounds each with Hannah finishing with seven and Fuhrmann six. The Eagles outrebounded the Blugolds, 39-24. Anderson finished with six rebounds and team-high four assists. 

UW-Eau Claire shot 36.4% from the field, including 24.0% (six-of-25) from three-point range, and 82.4% (14-of-17) at the line. Hall led the Blugolds with 15 points while Voigt finished with 14. Brooks had 13 points and Casper 10. Brooks had a game-high nine rebounds.

UWL returns to action Wednesday, January 19 at UW-Whitewater at 7 p.m.
