UWL Extends Winning Streak to Ten; Sweeps UW-Eau Claire

Eau Claire, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with a non-conference doubleheader sweep at UW-Eau Claire Saturday afternoon at Bollinger Field. The Eagles, now 26-10 on the season, won the opener, 20-9 in seven innings, and the nightcap, 12-2 in seven innings. The Blugolds drop to 4-30 on the season.
 
It is UWL's first 10-game winning streak since 2015. The Eagles finished 36-16 in 2015 and finished second at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships. UWL's last 11-game winning streak came in 2014. The school record of 12 straight victories came in 1977. UWL also won 11 straight games in 1976, 1979 and 2012. 

UWL scored seven times in the third inning in Saturday's opener. Zach Carney reached on an error with one out and went to third on Jack Olver's double. Brennan Schmitt followed with a three-run home run to make it 3-0. Mac Born then walked and advanced to third on Jack Kelly's double. Born scored on Ty Hamilton's sacrifice fly. Jake Masani had an RBI on a fielder's choice later in the inning and Spencer Hans and Colton Schraepfer followed with run-scoring singles. 

UW-Eau Claire got on the board in the bottom of the inning on Otto Treichel's bases-loaded walk scoring Anthony Pogodzinski. 

Both team scored six runs in the fourth inning on a combined three hits. There were nine walks and three hit-by-pitch in the inning. Olver and Schmitt walked to start UWL's fourth inning with Olver then scoring on Born's double to give UWL a 8-1 advantage. After a pitching change and walk loaded the bases, Hamilton drew a walk to score Schmitt. Born, Kelly and Hamilton all scored wild pitches while Hans scored the final run of the inning on a Blugolds' throwing error.

UW-Eau Claire tallied six runs in the fourth. The Blugolds drew a pair of bases-loaded walks in the inning while another run scored on a hit-by-pitch. UW-Eau Claire also scored on a UWL error, RBI ground out from Will Jilek and RBI double by Chase Yaeger. 

The Eagles added to their lead with a pair of runs in the sixth on Andrew Rajkovich's RBI double and Olver's run-scoring ground out. The Blugolds got the two runs back in the bottom of the inning without the benefit of a hit. Logan Matson was hit-by-pitch with one out followed by Jacob Lacy and Henry Pitsch drawing walks to load the bases. Matson scored on Jilek's fielder's choice and Lacy later scored after Pogodzinski struck out, but reached first on a UWL throwing error. 

UWL scored times in the seventh on seven hits. Hamilton, Rajkovich and Kevin Koelbl each had RBI singles, Olver and RBI double and Hans a sacrifice fly. 

Cooper Schnackenberg (2-0) earned the win, going 1.2 innings in relief.  He allowed one walk with two strikeouts. Ben Byom started, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing four hits, seven runs (four earned) and five walks while striking out two. Jack Perinovic went 2.0 innings in relief, allowing two runs (one earned) and three walks with a strikeout. The Eagles finished with 16 hits in the opener with five players recording at least two. Kelly went 3-for4 with three runs while Rajkovich, Born, Olver and Schmitt each had two hits. Schmitt and Hamilton each had three RBI while Born, Hans and Masini each scored three times. 

Brenton Boldt suffered the loss for UW-Eau Claire, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing seven hits, 10 runs (six earned) and five walks while striking out one. The Blugolds had four hits in the game with Yaeger going 2-for-3 with a run and RBI. Treichel and Jilek each had two RBI while Lacy and Pogodzinski each scored twice.

UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second in the nightcap with Shane Coker scoring on a passed ball. The Eagles added a pair of runs in the third and six in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead. Schmitt was hit-by-pitch with one out in the third, stolen second and scored on Born's two-run home run. In the fourth, Olver had a two-run double, Born and Tim Urlaub RBI singles, Rajkovich a sacrifice fly and Schmitt scored on a balk. 

UW-Eau Claire scored a run in the fourth and fifth before UWL tallied three in the sixth. Schraepfer had a two-run double and Carney an RBI single in the sixth. 

Charlie Dardis (2-0) earned the win for UWL, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing six hits, two runs (one earned) and one walk while striking out seven. The Eagles finished with 14 hits with Olver going 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Urlaub went 3-for-5 with a run and RBI while Born finished 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI. Carney had two hits while Schmitt, Coker, and Schraepfer each scored twice. 

David Janssen (0-4) took the loss for UW-Eau Claire. He went 3.0 innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs (six earned) with one strikeout. The Blugolds had seven hits with Jilek finishing 2-for-3.

UWL returns to action Wednesday, May 12 hosting UW-Oshkosh in its regular-season home finale. Game one of the doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. at Copeland Park.
