Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep at UW-Platteville Tuesday afternoon at Kendall Murray Field. The Eagles won the opener, 11-1, and the nightcap, 10-6 to extend their winning streak to six. UWL improves to 12-4 overall while UW-Platteville drops to 8-8.
The Eagles have scored at least 10 runs in all six victories. It marks the first time in school history UWL has scored at least 10 runs in six consecutive games.
Four UWL pitchers combined to hold UW-Platteville to two hits in Tuesday's opener.
Jack Perinovic (1-0) earned the win, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out nine. He did not allow a hit until one out in the bottom of the sixth.
Will Monroe (one hit, one unearned run, one strikeout),
Chris Seveska (one strikeout) and
Jack Durst (one walk, two strikeouts) each pitched 1.0 inning in relief.
The Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Shane Coker singled to start the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a strikeout.
Andrew Rajkovich knocked in Coker with an RBI double to make it 1-0.
Spencer Hans' two-out single scored Rajkovich and Hans later scored on a UW-Platteville error for a 3-0 lead.
Brennan Schmitt's RBI double in the third scored
Jordan Williams to make it 4-0.
UWL added three runs in the fourth on a
Zach Carney single while Williams was hit-by-pitch and Coker drew a walk with both coming with the bases-loaded.
Shane Coker had three hits and five RBI in the doubleheader.
UW-Platteville scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the seventh on a Anders Lind RBI single after Logan Kozak reached on a UWL error. The Eagles tallied two runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Williams and Schmitt each had RBI ground outs in the eighth while
Jake Masini had a run-scoring ground out in the ninth.
Colin Kleffman scored the final run on a UW-Platteville error.
UWL totaled 12 hits in the opener with Rajkovich finishing 3-for-4 with three runs and one RBI. Schmitt finished with two hits and two RBI while Hans added two hits, two runs and an RBI. Williams had two RBI.
Logan Black (0-1) suffered the loss for UW-Platteville, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing five hits, four runs and one walk while striking out two. Lind and Jason Adams each had a hit for the Pioneers.
In the nightcap, UWL raced out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
Connor Roesler walked to start the game and went to second on
Jack Olver's single. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Coker's one-out double to right-center field. Coker moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on
Parker Plume's RBI groundout. The Eagles added a pair of unearned runs in the second. Masini singled to start the inning and stole second with two outs. Roesler walked and scored with Masini on a UW-Platteville error after Olver singled.
UWL took a 6-0 lead in the top of fourth.
Logan Pye singled to open the inning and advanced to second on
Kevin Koelbl's sacrifice bunt. Roesler followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners. Olver's single then scored Pye to make it 6-0.
UW-Platteville got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with three runs. Jake Wegner doubled to start the inning and went to third on a Jonathan Kelso single. Garrett Gillund followed with a two-run double knocking in both runners. After a walk and single loaded the bases with no outs, Grant Mullins drew a walk to cut the lead to 5-3, but UWL's
Charlie Dardis struck out the next three batters to end the inning.
Connor Roesler scored four runs in the nightcap.
The Eagles got one of the runs back in the top of the sixth as Roesler singled and later scored on Schmitt's two-out single to make it 7-3. The Pioneers cut the deficit to 7-5 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Kelso doubled with one out and stole third. After Guillund walked, Kelso scored on a Ryan Vogel's fielder's choice to cut the lead to 7-4. Vogel later scored as Jordan Collins reached on a UWL error.
UWL scored three times on one hit and one UW-Platteville error in the eighth. Koelbl walked with one out, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. After Roesler walked, Koelbl scored as Olver reached first on a UW-Platteville error. Roesler and Olver advanced into scoring position after Schmitt's ground out and scored on Coker's two-out double to give the Eagles a 10-5 lead. Wegner scored on Kelso's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth for UW-Platteville to cut the lead to 10-6.
UWL finished with 11 hits in the second game on Tuesday as Olver went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Roesler finished 2-for-2 with three walks and four runs while Coker went 2-for-5 with two doubles, one run and four RBI.
Cooper Schnackenberg (1-0) earned the victory for the Eagles, pitching 3.0 innings in relief. He allowed one hit and one run while recording four strikeouts. Michael Ellingsen started, going 4.0 innings, allowing three hits, three runs and five walks with three strikeouts. Dardis went 2.0 innings in relief, allowing two hits, two runs (one earned) and three walks with three strikeouts.
Riche Jesse Jr. took the loss for UW-Platteville, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits, six runs (four earned) and three walks with two strikeouts. The Pioneers recorded six hits in the game. Kelso and Wegner each had two hits and scored twice. Gillund finished with two RBI.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, April 14 with a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader at UW-Stevens Point at 1 p.m.
