Rock Island, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team split a doubleheader at Augustana College (Ill.) on Saturday. The Vikings earned a 1-0 win in 10 innings in the opener while the Eagles took the nightcap, 2-0. UWL is now 2-4 on the season while Augustana (Ill.) is 3-5.
The opener remained scoreless until the bottom of the 10th. Tristan Bautista was placed on second for Augustana (Ill.) to start the inning and replaced by pinch-runner Olivia Blood. After a strikeout, Jennifer Sears reached on an infield single. Ashley Dehmlow then delivered the game-winning RBI single to knock in Blood for the only run of the game.
UWL totaled 10 hits in the opener with
Sydne Shattuck finishing 2-for-3.
Mia Schmidtke went 2-for-5 while
Jordyn McCormack finished 2-for-4. The Eagles left nine runners on base in the game.
Maddie Muelken (0-2) suffered the loss for the Eagles, going 9.2 innings, allowing seven hits and one unearned while finishing with five strikeouts. She had a perfect game for 5.2 innings before the Vikings' Erin Smith singled with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.
Augustana (Ill.) finished with seven hits in the opener. Nadia Ranieri (2-2) earned the victory for the Vikings, pitching 1.0 inning, allowing no hits while striking out eight. Cecelia Peine started for Augustana (Ill.), going 9.0 innings, allowing 10 hits with six strikeouts.
In the nightcap, UWL took a 2-0 advantage in the top of the third with
Jordyn McCormack reaching on a fielder's choice allowing
Sabrina Scardamaglia to score.
Kendra Leis followed with an RBI single to score McCormack for a 2-0 lead.
UWL finished with eight hits in the nightcap as Scardamaglia went 2-for-3 while Leis finished 1-for-3 and one RBI.
Sydne Shattuck (2-0) earned the victory, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing four hits, zero runs and one walk with seven strikeouts.
Elise Weinzierl picked up the save, going 1.2 innings, allowing one walk while striking out five.
Augustana (Ill.) had four hits with Dehmlow, Ashlyn Mathers and Sydney Ohrtmann each finishing 1-for-3. Ranieri (2-3) took the loss, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing eight hits, two runs with two strikeouts.
UWL returns to action Saturday, March 27 at St. Mary's University (Minn.) at 2 p.m.
