Dubuque, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team fell 4-3 in a shootout at Loras College (Iowa) Sunday afternoon at the Rock Bowl in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Quarterfinals. The game ended in a 2-2 double overtime tie forcing the shootout.
UWL ends its season at 16-4-4 while Loras (Iowa) is 21-0-2 and advances to the national semifinals December 3 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The Duhawks, ranked ninth in the country, took a 1-0 lead at 31:00 as Payton McDonnell scored an unassisted goal. The Eagles quickly responded with the tying goal with
Shana Macphail scoring at 32:59 on
Katie Feller's assist. The game remained tied, 1-1, at halftime. UWL had four shots in the first half while Loras (Iowa) totaled five.
Natalie Schisel had three shots and an assist Sunday.
Loras (Iowa) took a 2-1 lead at 70:37 with Emma Casebolt scoring off a corner kick. McDonnell recorded the assist. UWL came back to force overtime as
Sophie Amundson scored at 85:51 on Feller's second assist of the game.
Natalie Schisel also recorded an assist. The Duhawks and Eagles each had two shots in the final 3:00 of regulation with Kyndal Kells of Loras (Iowa) and
Quinn Shannon of UWL both recording a save.
UWL had three shots in the first overtime period Sunday while Loras (Iowa) had two. The Duhawks had the only shot in the second extra session.
Playing its second straight shootout, UWL scored on its first attempt by
Ellie Arndt. The Eagles earned a 3-1 shootout victory over Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.) in Saturday's third round. The game had ended in a 1-1 double overtime tie.
Loras (Iowa) tied the shootout Sunday at 1-1 on McDonnell's attempt. Feller converted UWL's second shot for a 2-1 lead, but Loras (Iowa) tied it on Brynn Jacobi's attempt.
The Eagles'
Ainsley Allan and Duhawks' Megan Wick both missed on the third attempts in the shootout. After
Jenna Nichols missed on UWL's fourth shot, Hannah Schmitz connected for Loras (Iowa) to give the Duhawks a 3-2 advantage.
Megan Goodman's shot was good for UWL to force a 3-3 tie, but Savannah Johnson recorded the eventual winner on the fifth attempt for Loras (Iowa) to give the Duhawks the 4-3 win.
UWL finished with 14 shots, including nine on goal. Schisel had a team-high three shots with one on goal. Macphail and Amundson each had two shots, both coming on goal. Eight different players recorded a shot on goal. Loras (Iowa) totaled 13 shots with five coming on goal. Schmitz finished with four shots (one on goal) while McDonnell had two shots, both on goal.
Loras (Iowa) had seven corner kicks in the contest with UWL totaling four.
Shannon recorded three saves for the Eagles while Kells registered seven for the Duhawks.
