Box Score Dubuque, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team advanced to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Quarterfinals with a 3-1 shootout victory over sixth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.) Saturday afternoon at Loras College's (Iowa) Rock Bowl. The game ended in a 1-1 tie after two overtimes before UWL earned the shootout win.
With the win, UWL advances to the NCAA III Quarterfinals for the second time in school history. The Eagles earned a 2-1 victory over WashU (Mo.) in the 2017 sectional semifinals. UWL will face Loras (Iowa) or Centre College (Ky.) in the quarterfinals Sunday, November 21 at 1 p.m.
UWL took a 1-0 lead Saturday at 40:23 with a goal from
Shana Macphail on a
Alexis McMahon assist. The Eagles led, 1-0, at halftime. UWL had two shots in the first half while WashU (Mo.) totaled 10.
The game remained 1-0 until the Bears tied it at 82:38 on Gabbie Cesarone's goal. Kate Flynn and Erin Flynn each recorded an assist. WashU (Mo.) outshot UWL, 12-2 in the second half. Both teams had a shot in the last 6:35 of regulation.
WashU (Mo.) had three shots in the first overtime while UWL recorded one. The Eagles'
Quinn Shannon and the Bears' Sidney Conner each had a save. UWL had a pair of shots in the second extra session with Conner recording a save. WashU (Mo.) had one shot in the second overtime.
In the shootout, WashU (Mo.) missed on its first attempt while UWL's
Katie Feller scored on the Eagles' first shot. Emily Kaufman scored for the Bears to tie the shootout at 1-1. After UWL missed on its second attempt, WashU (Mo.) also missed on its third shot.
Lizzy Eggers gave UWL a 2-1 shootout lead on the team's third attempt and after the Bears missed their fourth shot,
Sophie Amundson's scored for the Eagles to give UWL the 3-1 shootout win.
UWL finished with seven shots, including four on goal. Macphail had three shots, all coming on goal. WashU (Mo.) totaled 26 shots with 11 on goal. Erin Flynn had five shots with two on goal while Riley Alvarez finished with four shots, including three on goal. Cesarone had four shots with two on goal.
Shannon recorded nine saves while UWL also had one team save. Conner finished with three saves for WashU (Mo.).
UWL is now 6-3-2 all-time in four NCAA Division III Championship appearances, all coming under head coach
Jason Murphy. WashU (Mo.) and UWL were meeting for third time in the NCAA Division III Championships. WashU (Mo.) earned a 3-0 win in the third round in 2018 while UWL earned the 2-1 victory in the third round in 2017.
