UWL Falls in Overtime at UW-Oshkosh in WIAC Semifinals

Box Score Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 76-68 in overtime at UW-Oshkosh Thursday night in Kolf Sports Center in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship Semifinal (presented by Culver's). The Eagles, ranked 20th on D3hoops.com, drop to 21-6 on the season while the Titans improve to 18-8. UW-Oshkosh advances to the tournament championship game Saturday, February 29 hosting UW-Eau Claire.

UWL will await word if its earned an at-large bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships. The 64-team will be announced Monday, March 2 at 11:30 a.m. 

The Eagles scored the first five points of the game on an Ethan Anderson three-pointer and layup. The Titans led, 13-12, when they scored six straight points for a 19-12 advantage on David Vlotho's three-point field goal. UWL responded with a 13-3 run to take a 25-22 lead with 6:11 left after Wyatt Cook's three-point field goal. UW-Oshkosh went on a 14-2 run of its own for a 36-27 lead on Adam Fravert's pair of free throws with 2:46 remaining. The Titans led, 42-34, at halftime. 

UW-Oshkosh led, 47-38, with 16:34 remaining. Cook's two free throws with 12:18 left cut the deficit to 51-49. The Titans took a 61-57 lead with 4:12 remaining on Jack Flynn's two free throws, but Cook's two free throws (3:49 left) and Anderson's three-pointer (3:14) gave the Eagles a 62-61 lead. Will Mahoney made a pair of free throws for UW-Oshkosh with 2:03 remaining to give the Titans a 63-62 advantage. After a missed UWL layup, Flynn made one-of-two at the line with 1:05 left to make it 64-62. Cook tied the game at 64-64 with :46 remaining on a layup. Mahoney missed a three-pointer for UW-Oshkosh with :22 left and Cook missed a jumper for UWL with :02 remaining as the contest went into overtime.

The Titans never trailed in overtime as Flynn made two free throws with 4:47 remaining to make it 66-64.  Flynn's layup gave UW-Oshkosh a 68-64 advantage with 3:27 left, but Anderson connected on two free throws with 3:10 remaining to cut it to 68-66. Fravert followed with a layup for a four-point lead and Eddie Muench's jumper with 1:36 remaining gave UW-Oshkosh a 72-66 lead. Luke Norcia's two free throws with :30 left cut the lead to 72-68, but Fravert and Mahoney each made a pair of free throws in the final :27.

UWL shot 38.3% from the field, including 33.3% (eight-of-24) from three-point range, and 70.0% (14-of-20) at the line. Anderson led the Eagles with 25 points, eight rebounds and three assists. He was eight-of-13 from the field, including four-of-five from three-point range, and five-of-six at the line. Cook finished with 14 points and five rebounds while Norcia and Seth Anderson each totaled 10 points. Zac Haese added seven points. 

UW-Oshkosh shot 44.1% from the field, including 26.1% (six-of-23) from three-point range, and 75.0% (18-of-24) at the free throw line. Flynn led the Titans iwht 24 points while Fravert had 23 and Mahoney 12. Fravert had a game-high 13 rebounds while Flynn finished with 12.
