Box Score Bloomington, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse earned a 2-1 win at nationally-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 3-2 on the season while the Titans, ranked 18th on the D3soccer.com Top-25 Preseason Poll, fall to 1-2.
Illinois Wesleyan's Caelyn Steffens scored just 14 seconds into the match, assisted by Erin Peck. Â It would be the Titans' only goal of the game. UWL's Kaitlyn Villars found the back of net at 26:34 to tie the game 1-1. Â It was Villars' third goal on the season. Cassidy Rothwell assisted the goal. The game remained tied, 1-1, at halftime.Â
UWL finished with five shots in the opening half while Illinois Wesleyan totaled seven.Â
Sydney Halstead gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead at 45:19 assisted by Villars. It was Halstead's first goal of the year.Â
Illinois Wesleyan totaled eight shots in the second half, including four in the final 8:00. The Titans had 15 shots for the game with five on goal. Flower Edington led the team wiht five shots.Â
UWL had seven shots overall with four on goal. Villars finished with three shots, including two on goal.
Shannon Quinn earned the victory for the Eagles, recording four saves. Kelli McCarthy suffered the loss in net for the Titans, making two saves.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, September 11 hosting St. Catherine University (Minn.) at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.
