UWL Knocks Off UW-Whitewater to Remain Undefeated in WIAC

La Crosse, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team used a 16-1 run midway through the second half to help secure a 75-60 win over 14th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Saturday night in Mitchell Hall.
 
The win helps the Eagles remain unbeaten in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play at 4-0 and moves them to 11-4 overall as they have won nine of their last ten games. The Warhawks, ranked 14th on D3hoops.com, fall to 1-3 in WIAC action and 12-3 overall.

Ben Meinholz scores season-high 23 points to lead the Eagles.

UWL forced three straight turnovers to start the game and help them jump out to a 13-6 lead with 13:03 left in the first half. Ethan Anderson capped the run with back-to-back field goals including a three pointer for the Eagles. UWW would quickly erase their deficit with a 9-0 run to take a 15-13 lead with 7:30 on the clock. After the Eagles tied the game at 19 (4:41), the Warhawks scored 11 of the next 13 points to take its largest lead of the game at 30-21 with 1:01 remaining in the opening period. Anderson would score the final four points of the first half for the Eagles to cut their deficit to 30-25 at the half.
 
UWL shot just nine-of-32 (28.1%) from the floor in the first half including one-of-seven (14.3%) from the three-point line. UWL had just three players score in the first half led by Anderson with 11 points while Brendon Manning chipped in eight and Ben Meinholz added six points. UWW finished the first half 11-of-27 (40.7%) from the floor including three-of-six (50%) from behind the three point line. Andre Brown led the Warhawks with seven points in the opening period.
 
Meinholz scored on the Eagles first four possessions of the second half to tie the game at 34 with 18:07. The Warhawks would take a 38-36 lead but that would be short lived as the Eagles went on a 16-1 run to take a 52-39 lead with 11:54 left in the game. UWL would not give up the lead the rest of the game and took its largest lead of the game at 61-44 with 8:09 on the clock. The Warhawks would cut the deficit to 65-56 on a free throw by Tywon Bressler with 4:09 left but would not get any closer the rest of the way.
 
UWL shot much better in the second half, 21-of-34 (61.8%), as they finished 30-of-66 (45.5%) including five-of-16 (31.3%) from three point range and a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line. The perfect night from the free throw line marks the fourth time ever the Eagles did not miss a free throw as they also did it against UW-Eau Claire (14-14, 12/05/2009), against UW-Superior (10-10, 1/03/2009) and against UW-Platteville (13-13, 2/26/1994).
 
Meinholz scored a game high and season high 23 points to lead three scorers in double figures for the Eagles. Manning finished with 20 points and eight rebounds while Anderson added 16 points.
 
The Warhawks finished the game 24-of-54 (44.4%) from the floor including five-of-17 (29.4%) from the three-point line and seven-of-13 (53.8%) from the free throw line. Andre Brown led UWW with 17 points while Melvin Brown finished with 13 points.
 
UWL will look to remain undefeated in WIAC play when it travels to UW-Stevens Point Wednesday, January 16 to take on the Pointers at 7 p.m.
