La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday afternoon in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles, receiving votes on this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll, fell 3-2 (12-25, 25-22, 25-20, 19-25, 12-15) to Wartburg College (Iowa) before coming back to earn a 3-2 (20-25, 25-27, 25-18, 25-21, 15-13) win over St. Norbert College (Wis.).
UWL is now 7-4 on the year.
Versus Wartburg (Iowa),
Marisa Johnson led UWL with 15 kills while
Emma Lawrence finished with 12.
Abbey Fox recorded 23 assists and 16 digs as the Eagles hit .038 (41-35-159).
Julia Van Fleet led the Eagles with 26 digs with Johnson adding 13.
UWL led 9-4 in the fifth and deciding set before Wartburg (Iowa) used an 8-1 run to take a 12-10 advantage. The Eagles trailed 13-12, but the Knights scored the final two points to win the match.
After losing the first two sets to St. Norbert (Wis.), UWL came back to win the match with a final score of 15-13 in the fifth set. Johnson led the Eagles with 21 kills while Lawrence finished with 14 and Meghan Paider with 10. Fox had 32 assists with UWL hitting .197 (63-25-193) overall. Van Fleet had 28 digs, Fox 24 and Johnson 10 for the Eagles.
St. Norbert (Wis.) took a 12-11 lead on a Grace Baumann kill, but a kill from
Liz Lansink, ace from
Emily Jenewein and ball handling error by the Green Knights gave the Eagles a 14-12 advantage. St. Norbert (Wis.) cut the lead to 14-13 before Johnson's kill gave the win to UWL.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, September 19 hosting UW-Oshkosh in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener at 7 p.m.
