Softball Team Drops Doubleheader in Season Finale

Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team dropped a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader at UW-Oshkosh Tuesday afternoon. The Titans took the opener, 4-3, and the nightcap, 4-2. UWL finishes its season at 18-18 overall and 5-9 in the WIAC. UW-Oshkosh improves to 23-10 overall and 10-4 in the conference. The Titans will be the second-seed for the WIAC Tournament May 4-6 at UW-Whitewater.

In the opener, UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Brittany Baldwin walked to lead-off the game and advanced to second on Sydney Murphy's sacrifice bunt. Baldwin went to third on a groundout and after a Grace Mindrup walk put runners on first and third, Sabrina Scardamaglia doubled to knock in Baldwin with the game's first run.

UW-Oshkosh took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Claire Petrus had a two-run double scoring Katie Fontanetta and Bailey Smaney to give the Titans a 2-1 lead. Amanda McIlhany later singled with two outs to knock in Petrus to make it 3-1. The Titans added to their lead in the sixth as Natalie Dillon came in on Brianna Witter's two-out single for a 4-1 lead. 

UWL scored twice in the seventh. Sarah Stewart singled to start the inning and was replaced by pinch-runner Allison Oster. Katie Block then reached on a UW-Oshkosh fielding error to put runners and first and second. Pinch-hitter Dani Mestelle followed with a single to score Oster to cut the lead to 4-2 and move Block to third. After a pop-out for the first out of the inning, Baldwin's single knocked in Block with an unearned run to make it 4-3. Murphy's fielder's choice retired pinch-runner Maddie Yont at third base for the second out of the inning and Mia Schmidtke lined out to second to end the game. 

Caitlyn Hughes (7-10) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing three hits and three runs. Katie Klein went 2.2 innings, allowing three hits and one run with one strikeout. The Eagles finished with seven hits as Baldwin went 3-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI. 

Bailey Smaney (9-2) earned the win for UW-Oshkosh, going 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks while striking out two. Six different players had a hit for the Titans. 

In the nightcap, UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth as Oster scored on Haley Radewan's single. The Eagles made it 2-0 in the top of hte sixth on Oster's solo home run. UW-Oshkosh responded in the bottom of the inning with four runs on three hits and two UWL errors. Natalie Dudek's sacrifice fly cut the lead to 2-1 and Witter scored on a throwing error to tie the game. Kailee Garstecki followed with an RBI double and Acacia Tupa an RBI single to make it 4-2.

Klein (4-3) took the loss, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing three hits and four runs (one earned). Four different players had a hit for the Eagles.

Petrus (12-7) picked up the win in game two, going 7.0 innings, allowing four hits, two runs and two walks while striking out three. The Titans finished with 10 hits with Garstecki going 3-for-3. Witter was 2-for-3.
