La Crosse, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team swept a doubleheader against UW-Platteville Wednesday afternoon at Copeland Park. UWL won the opener 17-1 in seven innings, and the nightcap 7-4. The Eagles, receiving votes on this week's Collegiate Baseball/American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Top-30 Poll, improve to 13-6 on the season, and 5-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Pioneers drop to 6-16 overall and 0-6 in the WIAC.
UWL has won 11 of the last 12 meetings against UW-Platteville.
In the opener Wednesday, UWL scored a run in the bottom of the first without a hit.
Luke Schmitt walked with one out, and advanced to third after
Brennan Schmitt reached on a throwing error. Another Pioneers' error in the field allowed
Luke Schmitt to score to make it 1-0.
The Eagles added two runs on two hits in the bottom of the second and led 3-0. An
Alex Robson double to left in the third inning drove in a pair to give UWL a 5-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, UWL broke open the game, scoring eight runs on seven hits.
Brennan Schmitt had two singles in the inning, drove in two runs, and scored twice in the frame to put the Eagles ahead 13-0 after five complete.
UW-Platteville got on the board in the top of the sixth with a run on two hits, making it 13-1.
UWL started the bottom of the sixth with two singles and a walk to load the bases.
Cal Tully scored on a fielders choice to make it 14-1. Then after a pitching change,
Brennan Schmitt doubled to left, driving in two more to make it 16-1. A double to left from
Peyton Henry drove in Schmitt, and the Eagles led 17-1.
UW-Platteville loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but
Remington Schneider struck out the final two batters to give UWL the 17-1 win.
James Witt recorded six strikeouts in Wednesday's opener.
UWL's
James Witt (1-0) picked up the win, allowing a run on five hits over 6.0 innings. He struck out six and walked three batters.
Brennan Schmitt went 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored for the Eagles. Robson went 2-for-2 with two RBI, a double, and two runs scored while
Brady Stolzman went 2-for-4 with two RBI, a double, and a run scored.
Tyler Vogel (1-3) took the loss for UW-Platteville, giving up five runs on three hits over 3.0 innings. He struck out three and walked four batters. Collin Mormann went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored for the Pioneers.
In the nightcap, UW-Platteville took the early lead. Josh Moses singled up the middle with two outs, scoring Brennan Kearney, who had doubled to open the game, and the Pioneers led 1-0.
UWL answered in the bottom of the frame. After
Nate Heili singled up the middle,
Zach Carney homered to left to make it 2-1 Eagles after one inning.
UW-Platteville scored in the top of the third to tie the game at 2-2, but UWL got a run on two hits in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead. Carney singled with one out, and later scored on a
Brady Stolzman double down the right field line to make it 3-2 Eagles.
The Pioneers scored two in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead, but again the Eagles answered in the bottom of the inning.
Mitch Sutton led off with a single to center, and with one out,
Nate Roethle walked. Heili singled to right, driving in Sutton. Carney singled, scoring Roethle, with Heili also scoring after two throwing errors on the play to give UWL a 6-4 lead.
The Eagles got a run in the sixth on two hits.
Peyton Henry doubled to left, and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a bunt single from Roethle, making it 7-4.
Zach Pronschinski (2-1) earned the victory for UWL, pitching 3.2 innings. He struck out three and walked one batter without giving up a hit.
Caleb Willems picked up his fourth save of the year, giving up a hit over 2.0 innings. He struck out two batters. It was Willems' 12th career save, moving into a tie for second in school history. He is tied for second with
James Sadowske (2014-15) with 12 career saves.
Cory Anderson (1995-98) is the career leader with 22.
Owen Olson started the game for the Eagles, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits over 3.1 innings. He struck out five and walked two.
Carney went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored for the Eagles. Heili was 2-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored.
Darren Strasburg (0-1) took the loss for UW-Platteville. He gave up six runs (four earned) in 5.0 innings, striking out three and walking one batter. Jonny Kelso had three hits to lead the Pioneers.
UWL returns to action Friday, April 14 hosting second-ranked UW-Whitewater at noon for a doubleheader at Copeland Park.
