Baseball Team Sweeps St. Scholastica (Minn.) At Copeland Park

La Crosse, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team swept a doubleheader against the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) Friday at Copeland Park.  UWL won the opener 6-4 and the nightcap 14-11.  The Eagles improve to 8-5 on the season, while the Saints, receiving votes on D3baseball.com and the Collegiate Baseball/ABCA polls, drop to 6-5 overall.
 
In the opener, UWL took an early lead in the bottom-half of the first.  Nate Heili singled to left center to open the frame, followed by a Zach Carney two-run home run to put the Eagles ahead 2-0. 
 
St. Scholastica (Minn.) got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth.  Joey Zwak led off the inning with a home run to right center to make it 2-1. 
 
The Eagles added two runs in the bottom of the sixth and again in the seventh.  Brady Stolzman hit a two-run home run with one out in the sixth to make it 4-1, driving in Alex Robson, who had opened the inning with a bunt single. 
 
In the seventh, UWL manufactured two more runs on two hits.  Heili walked to open the frame, stole second and advanced to third on a Carney double to center.  Heili scored on a sacrifice fly from Shane Coker to make it 5-1.  Carney later scored on a on a Robson single to make it 6-1 in favor of UWL going to the eighth. 

The Saints scored three runs on three hits in the eighth to cut the lead to 6-5, but UWL's Caleb Willems got Steven Neutzling to fly out to end the threat in the eighth.  In the St. Scholastica (Minn.) ninth, Willems struck out the first two batters before forcing a ground out to short to end the game.

Williems (1-1) picked up the win for UWL, pitching 4.2 innings in relief.  He allowed three earned runs on five hits, and struck out seven.  Starting pitcher Mason McMahon went 4.1 innings, giving up an earned run on four hits.  He struck out eight and walked six batters. 
 
UWL had 12 hits in the game with eight-of-nine starters recording at least one hit.  Carney, Brennan Schmitt, Robson, and Mitch Sutton had two hits each for the Eagles.  Carney and Robson had two RBI, while Heili had a hit, two walks, and scored two runs for UWL. 

St. Scholastica (Minn.) had nine hits in the game, led by Zwak, who went 2-for-5 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored.  Drew Colvard and Neutzling had two hits each.  The Saints stranded 12 runners in the game, including leaving the bases loaded in the first, third, and fifth innings.
 
Dan Hansen (2-2) took the loss for the Saints.  Hansen pitched 6.0 innings, giving up four runs on ten hits.  He struck out four and walked one batter. 
 
In the nightcap, St. Scholastica (Minn.) led 1-0 going to the bottom half of the second.  UWL scored four runs on three hits, an error and a hit by pitch in the bottom half of the frame to lead 4-1 after two complete. 
 
Three straight singles for UWL loaded the bases in the bottom of the third.  Luke Schmitt walked to score Brennan Schmitt to make it 5-1 Eagles.  Robson scored after Sutton reached on a fielder's choice, making it 6-1. 
 
Carney homered with one out in the fourth to make it 7-1.  After again loading the bases, Stoltzman homered to center for a grand slam, and UWL was ahead 11-1. 

In the top of the sixth, Neutzling homered for the Saints, making the score 11-2.  UWL got the run back in the bottom of the frame on a Sutton single up the middle, driving in Robson to make it 12-2. 
 
St. Scholastica scored eight runs on four hits in the top of the seventh, cutting the lead to 12-10.  The inning featured a stolen base for the Saints, as well as two wild pitches for UWL, one hit batter, and four straight walks, including three with the bases loaded.   
 
The Eagles scored two in in the bottom of the eighth on a Sutton single up the middle that drove in Stolzman and Robson, and UWL led 14-10 going to the ninth. 
 
The top of the ninth started with a walk followed by two straight singles to drive in a run for St. Scholastica (Minn.), closing the gap to 14-11.  UWL's Zach Pronschinske then recorded three straight strikeouts to secure the win for the Eagles. 
 
Connor Cook (1-3) earned the win for UWL, giving up one run on two hits over 5.0 innings.  Cook walked two and struck out six.  Pronschinske earned his second save of the year, giving up a run on three hits.  He walked two and struck out four, including the final three batters of the game.  

Robson went 3-for-3 with a walk, and tied a single-game school record by scoring five runs in the game.  He ties the record set by John Kelliher versus Minnesota-Duluth on April 16, 1991. 

Stolzman was 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored, while Sutton went 2-for-4 with five RBI.    

Matt Tautges (1-1) took the loss for St. Scholastica (Minn.), giving up six runs (four earned) on five hits over 2.1 innings.  He struck out two and walked one.

Neutzling went 3-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored for the Saints.  Conor Wollenzien went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.   

UWL returns to action Tuesday, April 3 in the WIAC opener with a double-header with UW-Stout at 1 p.m.  The games, originally scheduled to be played at UW-Stout, are being moved to Copeland Park due to snow on the field in Menomonie.
