Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) Sunday afternoon in the Tucson Invitational. The Eagles won the opener, 5-1, and the nightcap, 10-1 in six innings. UWL improves to 7-9 on the season, finishing 7-7 on its spring trip. Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) is now 3-9.
The Gusties had earned a 4-3 victory over the Eagles February 24 in Rochester, Minnesota.
Maddie Muelken (3-1) earned the win in Sunday's opener, going 6.0 innings, allowing two hits, one run and two walks with two strikeouts. Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before UWL tied it in the bottom of the inning as
Sydney Murphy scored on
Grace Mindrup's single.
The Eagles tallied two runs in the fourth and fifth innings for a 5-1 lead.
Haley Radewan hit a solo home run to lead-off the fourth inning for UWL while
Sabrina Scardamaglia later scored on a fielder's choice. In the fifth,
Mia Schmidtke had an RBI double while Radewan added an RBI groundout.
UWL finished with eight hits. Mindrup went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Radewan had two RBI.
In the nightcap,
Caitlyn Hughes (3-5) picked up the win. She pitched 5.0 innings, allowing three hits, one run (unearned) and one walk with three strikeouts. The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Radewan's two-run double scoring Murphy and Schmidtke. After Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the first, UWL scored three runs on four hits in the second. Murphy had an RBI single while Schmidtke recorded a two-run single.
The Eagles scored five runs in the sixth on one hit with four Gusties' errors. Scardamaglia had a two-run double.
UWL finished with 10 hits as
Brittany Baldwin and Schmidtke each went 2-for-4 and
Kerrigan Koch 2-for-2.. Murphy scored three times while Schmidtke, Radewan and Scardamaglia each had two RBI.
UWL returns to action Saturday, March 24 at the Augustana College (Ill.) Invitational. The Eagles face the University of Dubuque (Iowa) at 1 p.m. and Augustana (Ill.) at 3 p.m.
