Winter Haven, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team split a pair of games in the Russmatt Central Florida Invitational Monday afternoon. The Eagles fell, 3-2, to 19th-ranked The College of New Jersey before coming back for a 9-7 victory over The College at Brockport (N.Y.). UWL, receiving votes on the D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, is now 3-2 on the season.
TCNJ, ranked 19th on D3baseball.com, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third Monday as Steve Bucci scored on Danny Borup's sacrifice fly. The Lions made it 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth after Zachary Shindler scored after Austin Lindsay's steal
UWL tied the game in the top of the eighth.
Nate Heili walked to start the inning and advanced to second after
Shane Coker drew a one-out walk. After a TCNJ pitching change,
Jack Dwyer walked for the Eagles to load the bases.
Brennan Schmitt then doubled down the rightfield line to score Heili and Coker to tie the game.
Alex Robson followed with a single, but Dwyer was thrown out at home.
TCNJ got the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Shindler singled with two outs and advanced to second on a UWL error. Lindsay then singled to knock in Shindler with a unearned run and 3-2 Lions' lead. Heili doubled with two outs in the top of the ninth for the Eagles, but was stranded with Schmitt grounding out to end the game.
Mason McMahon started for UWL, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned) and three walks while striking out nine.
Caleb Willems (0-1) suffered the loss, going 1.0 inning, allowing two hits and one unearned run. The Eagles had seven hits with Schmitt and Robson each collecting two.
Matt Curry (1-0) earned the win for TCNJ, going 1.2 innings, allowing three hits and one walk. The Lions also totaled seven hits with Shindler and Lindsay finishing with two each.
Each team scored a run in the first inning in UWL's win over Brockport (N.Y.). The Golden Eagles scored in the top of the frame as Nicholas Pastore scored on a passed ball. UWL tied the game in the bottom of the first on Coker's single scoring Heili.
The Eagles took a 5-1 lead with four runs in the bottom of the third. Coker and Dwyer each had RBI singles while Schmitt delivered a run-scoring double.
Brockport (N.Y.) responded with five runs in the top of the fourth and a single run in the fifth to lead 7-5. In the fourth, Pastore's two-run triple gave the Golden Eagles the 6-5 advantage. Liam O'Leary's fielder's choice in the fifth made it 7-5.
UWL cut the lead to 7-6 in the bottom of the sixth after Dwyer came in on Brockport (N.Y.) wild pitch. The Eagles took a 8-7 in the seventh inning and added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Coker hit a lead-off home run in the seventh to tie the game and Schmitt came in on a passed ball to give UWL a one-run lead. Schmitt's RBI single in the eighth scored Coker.
Owen Olson (1-0) picked up the win for UWL, pitching 3.2 innings. He allowed three hits, one run and two walks while striking out four.
Zach Pronschinske earned his first save, going 2.0 inning with two strikeouts. The Eagles had 11 hits in the game as Coker finished 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBI. Schmitt went 2-for-4 with two run and two RBI.
Maddux Minton (0-1) suffered the loss for Brockport (N.Y.), pitching 1.0 inning, allowing one hit, two runs (one earned) and two walks while striking out one. The Golden Eagles had nine hits with Lou Miceli and Drew DeBlasiis each finishing 2-for-4.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, March 14 versus RIT (N.Y.) at 12:30 p.m. (Central) in Auburndale, Florida. The teams will also play a JV game Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. (Central).
