UWL Earns Undefeated Non-Conference Season with Win over Redlands

Orange, Calif. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team wrapped up its undefeated non-conference schedule with a 56-39 victory over the University of Redlands (Calif.) Saturday afternoon in the Chapman University (Calif.) Winter Classic. The Eagles improve to 11-0 on the season while the Bulldogs drop to 3-9.

UWL is off to best start (11-0) to the season since winning its first 13 games in 2005-06. 

In the first-ever meeting between the teams, UWL never trailed in Saturday's game as it scored the first 15 points of the game. The Eagles led, 15-2, at the end of the first quarter as the Bulldogs were held without a field goal. Redlands (Calif.) got on the board with a pair of Alyssa Lee free throws with 1:20 remaining. The Bulldogs missed all 12 of their field goal attempts in the opening quarter. 

Dani Craig scored nine points in the opening quarter for UWL, including a pair of three-point field goals. She also had a three-point play to make it 15-0 with 2:47 left. 

Redlands (Calif.) came back in the second quarter to cut UWL's lead to 30-18 with 1:10 left before Emma Gamoke hit a three-point field goal with :38 remaining to give UWL a 33-18 halftime advantage.

The Bulldogs trailed, 33-22, with 7:13 left in the third quarter when the Eagles went on a 10-0 run to end the quarter and take a 43-22 lead. Redlands (Calif.) could get no closer than 15 points in the fourth quarter.

UWL, receiving votes on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, shot 40.4% from the field, including 35.3% (six-of-17) from three-point range, and 88.9% (eight-of-nine) at the free throw line. Gamoke led the Eagles with 12 points while Craig finished with 11. Kyah Steiner finished with eight points, six rebounds and two steals while Lexie Higgins had a team-high eight rebounds.

Redlands (Calif.) shot 20.8% from the field, including 31.3% (five-of-16) from three-point range, and 82.4% (14-of-17) at the line. Alyssa Downs led the Bulldogs with 14 points while Kellis Dack finished with a game-high 11 rebounds. 

UWL returns to action Wednesday, January 2 starting Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play at UW-Stout at 7 p.m.
