Waukesha, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team earned a 58-54 victory at Carroll University (Wis.) Saturday afternoon in Van Male Fieldhouse. The Eagles improve to 6-3 on the season with their third straight win overall while the Pioneers drop to 4-7. UWL now leads the all-time series, 9-1, with Carroll (Wis.).
The game was tied, 6-6, with 12:11 left in the first half when Carroll (Wis.) got five straight points after a Tyler Ingebrightsen layup and Tarren Hall three-pointer.
Josh Dahlke's layup for UWL cut the lead to to 13-9 with 9:09 remaining, but Carroll (Wis.) used a 10-4 run to lead 23-13 with 5:09 left on a Ingebrightsten three-point play.
After a UWL timeout, the Eagles responded with an 13-0 run to lead 26-23 with :52 remaining after a
Jack Kortes layup.
Terek Nesheim scored six points in the run. The Pioneers scored the final four points of the first half to take a 27-26 advantage, including Ryan Clarey's go-ahead layup with :03 left.
Carroll (Wis.) opened the second half on an 11-4 run to lead 38-30, but UWL used a 11-4 run of its own to cut the deficit to 42-41 with 11:32 left on Dahlke's layup. The Eagles took their first lead in the second half with 5:44 remaining on a
Taulvish McCray three-point field goal. After a Ray Pierce layup for Carroll (Wis.) cut the lead to 48-47 with 4:35 left,
Ben Meinholz hit a three-pointer with 4:10 remaining and Neshem's layup with 3:28 left gave UWL a 53-47 advantage.
The Eagles took a 57-51 lead on
Brendon Manning's three-point play, but the Pioneers' Clarey connected on a three-pointer with 1:25 left to cut it to 57-54. The Pioneers missed a potential game-tying three-point with :12 left with Meinholz grabbing the rebound. He hit one-of-two at the line to finish the scoring.
UWL shot 42.6% from the field, including 30.8% (four-of-13) from three-point range, and 61.5% (eight-of-13) at the line. Meinholz led the Eagles with 13 points and nine rebounds while Nesheim finished with 10 points. Manning and Dahlke each scored seven points with Manning adding eight rebounds.
Carroll (Wis.) shot 35.7% from the field, including 25.0% (four-of-16) from three-point range, and 71.4% (10-of-14) at the line. Ingebrightsen led the Pioneers with 18 points while Charlie Soule had a game-high 11 rebounds.
UWL returns to action Friday, December 28 in the D3 Desert Invitational in Phoenix, Arizona. The Eagles face Lake Forest College (Ill.) at 6 p.m. (Central).
