Ripon, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 61-57 at Ripon College (Wis.) Saturday afternoon in Weiske Gymnasium. The Eagles drop to 2-1 on the season while the Red Hawks improve to 1-1.
Ripon (Wis.) scored the first eight points of the game as UWL missed its first seven shots from the field. The Red Hawks took their largest lead of the game at 31-16 with 3:16 remaining in the first half on a Drew Jorgensen layup. The Eagles used a 10-0 run to end the half, including a pair of three-point field goals from
Ben Meinholz to cut the lead to 31-26. Meinholz had eight points in the run while
Brendon Manning hit a jumper with :01 left to make it a five-point game.
A pair of free throws from Tyson Tully with 13:06 left in the game provided a 39-32 lead for Ripon (Wis.). UWL responded with a 11-1 run to lead 43-40 with 9:12 remaining after a
Taulvish McCray jumper.
The Eagles took a 57-55 lead with 2:31 left on a Manning layup, but UWL would no score the rest of the way. Owen Theune's layup with 2:08 remaining tied the game for Ripon (Wis.) and after a missed three-point attempt by the Eagles, Ryan Steffes hit a go-ahead three-pointer for Ripon (Wis.) with 1:13 left. UWL turned the ball over on its next possession and Trent Jones made a pair of free throws with :04 to finish the scoring.
UWL shot 36.7% from the field, including 20.0% (four-of-20) from three-point range, and 69.2% (nine-of-13) at the free throw line. Manning led the Eagles with 21 points and nine rebounds while Meinholz finished with 16 points and five steals.
Ripon (Wis.) shot 47.8% from the field, including 45.5% (five-of-11) from three-point range, and 57.1% (12-of-21) at the line. Cal Schultz led the Red Hawks with 18 points and four assists while Jones finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Kyle Rutkowski had a game-high 12 rebounds.
UWL returns to action Tuesday, November 20 at 25th-ranked Saint John's University (Minn.) at 7 p.m.
