Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team fell 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 14-25, 25-18, 17-15) to Carthage College (Wis.) Saturday afternoon in Berg Gym. The Eagles, playing their final regular-season game of the season, fall to 16-12 overall while the Lady Reds improve to 19-8. Carthage (Wis.) is receiving votes on this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll.
UWL would lead early in the first set, but a Megan Behrendt ace would give Carthage (Wis.) its first lead at 10-9. The Eagles would come back to lead, 17-14, and, 21-20, but the Lady Reds would end the set with five straight scores. Carthage (Wis.) hit .324 (14-3-24) in the set.
In the second set, the Lady Reds would build an early 10-4 lead, but the Eagles came back to tie the game at 15-15 off a
Kathryn Maas kill. A Carthage (Wis.) attacking error would give UWL the lead and it would not trail the rest of the set winning, 25-23 on an
Emma Lawrence kill.
UWL jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third set, and the closest Carthage (Wis.) would get would be four points as the Eagles hit .312 (14-4-32). Carthage (Wis.) started the fourth set with a 5-0 run and would lead by as much as 19-8 before winning 25-18.
In the fifth and deciding set, UWL would go up 12-8 before Carthage (Wis.) tied the game at 15. The Lady Reds scored the final two points, winning 17-15 on an Andrea Kozak kill.
Lawrence led UWL with 16 kills while
Marisa Johnson finished with 14,
Liz Lansink 12 and Maas 11.
Abbey Fox recorded 48 assists and
Julia Van Fleet led the team with 24 digs. UWL hit .162 (58-30-173) and had 8.0 team blocks.
Megan Behrendt led Carthage (Wis.) with 19 kills and Kaila Johanason added 10. Ellie LeCount had 42 assists and Laura De Rosales had a game-high 27 digs. Carthage (Wis.) hit .184 (50-20-163) and had 8.0 team blocks.
UWL returns to action Tuesday, October 30 hosting UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m. in the first round of the WIAC Championship.
