Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team fell 24-13 at 12th-ranked UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium. The Eagles drop to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Titans improve to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
UW-Oshkosh, ranked 12th on this week's D3football.com Top-25 Poll, earned its eighth straight win over UWL with Saturday's victory.
UWL, receiving votes on D3football.com, forced a UW-Oshkosh punt on the first possession of the game. The Eagles drove to their own 48-yard line on their first drive, but were also forced to punt. UW-Oshkosh took a 7-0 lead four plays later as Mitch Gerhartz scored on a 51-yard run with 9:20 left in the first quarter. UWL faced and third-and-goal on the UW-Oshkosh four-yard line on its next possession, but quarterback
Ben Schramski was sacked by Cole Yoder.
Ryan Beirne missed a 33-yard field goal on the next play to keep it a 7-0 lead for UW-Oshkosh.
After forcing a punt, UWL tied the game on the final play of the second quarter with Schramski connecting with
Devonte Amos on an eight-yard touchdown pass. Beirne's extra-point tied the game. The Titans punted on their first possession of the second quarter and the Eagles drove to the UW-Oshkosh nine-yard line. UWL attempted a fake field goal, but Beirne's pass was incomplete. Two plays later, Kyle Radavich threw an 85-yard touchdown pass to Dom Todarello with 8:59 remaining in the second quarter to give UW-Oshkosh a 14-7 lead. Derrick Jennings Jr. intercepted a Schramski pass later in the second quarter and Peyton Peterson's 39-yard field goal with 3:23 left gave the Titans a 17-7 halftime lead.
The teams combined for punts (four each) on the first eight drives of the second half before Schramski hit
Cole Spieker with a 17-yard touchdown pass with 10:43 left in the fourth quarter to cut the UW-Oshkosh lead to 17-13.
Evan Lewandowski's pass attempt failed on the extra-point after a bad hold on the play. UW-Oshkosh responded on its ensuing drive to take a 24-13 lead with Radavich throwing a 22-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell Gerend with 7:13 left to finish the scoring in the game.
UWL finished with 284 yards, including 56 rushing and 228 passing. Schramski went 21-of-44 for 228 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Spieker (67 yards) and Amos (28) each had five catches and one touchdown while
Austin Mancosky led the Eagles with 40 yards rushing on 12 carries.
The Eagles totaled 19 first downs while going five-of-18 on third-down and two-of-three on third-down.
UW-Oshkosh had 408 yards with 174 rushing and 234 passing. Radavich finished 19-of-31 for 234 yards and two touchdowns for the Titans with Todarello having a team-high 103 receiving yards on four carries. Gerend had 81 yards receiving and one touchdown with a team-high eight receptions while Gerhartz rushed for 111 yards on 21 attempts and one touchdown.
The Titans finished with 15 first downs, going six-of-20 on third-down and three-of-three on fourth-down.
Eljiah McGeehan led UWL with 13 tackles while
Joey Bolda finished with 12. AJ Plewa led UW-Oshkosh with seven tackles with Cole Yoder and Scott Skornicka each having six.
UWL returns to action Saturday, October 27 hosting UW-Platteville at 1 p.m. for Varsity Homecoming.
