UW-La Crosse Earns Doubleheader Sweep over UW-Stout

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of UW-Stout Saturday afternoon at Copeland Park. The Eagles picked up a 9-3 victory in the opener and 5-0 in the nightcap to improve to 15-12 overall and 4-6 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). UW-Stout drops to 6-19 overall and 3-7 in the conference. 

In the opener, Jameson Lavery (4-2) earned the win, pitching 7.1 innings, allowing eight hits and three runs while recording six strikeouts. Brock Rude picked up his first save of the season, going 1.2 innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts. 

UWL took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on Brennan Schmitt's two-out single to score Nick Pescheck. The Eagles added a run in the fifth on back-to-back doubles from Joel Zyhowski and Carter Hoffman. UW-Stout cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the sixth on Ryan Connor's RBI single, but UWL responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 5-1. Zyhowski's double scored Pescheck and Hoffman followed with a two-run home run.

The Blue Devils scored twice in the top of the eighth on a Joel Hollow RBI double and Connor run-scoring single. The Eagles added to their lead with four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Alex Robson's fielder's choice scored Hoffman while Pescheck had a two-run double and Sam Prissel an RBI single.

UWL finished with 14 hits in the game, tied for the second-most this season. Eight starters recorded a hit with Pescheck finishing 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Zyhowski, Hoffman, Schmitt and Prissel each had two hits. 

Derek Graves (1-4) suffered the loss for UW-Stout, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing eight hits, five runs and four walks with three strikeouts. The Blue Devils totaled nine hits. Hollow finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while Connor went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Mason McMahon (2-1) picked up the win in Saturday's nightcap. He pitched a career-high 7.0 innings, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out a career-high 12. McMahon only allowed one runner to reach third base. Caleb Willems pitched 2.0 innings with two strikeouts. 

UWL scored all five of its runs with two outs. The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as Robson scored on Prissel's two-out single to make it 1-0. UWL added four runs on four hits in the seventh. Zyhowski's two-out single scored Connor Cook and Schmitt for a 3-0 advantage. Hoffman's double scored Zyhowski and Hoffman later scored on a UW-Stout wild pitch.

The Eagles had nine hits with seven players recorded at least one. Hoffman went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. 

Max Sires (2-5) suffered the loss for UW-Stout, going 7.0 innings, allowing eight hits, five runs (four earned) one walk with one strikeout. The Blue Devils were held to three hits with Kyle Hamilton finishing 2-for-3.

UWL and UW-Stout play another doubleheader Sunday, April 23 starting at noon.
