UWL Earns Sweep of Nationally-Ranked UW-Oshkosh

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of UW-Oshkosh Monday afternoon at North Campus Field. The Eagles earned a 5-0 win in the opener and 4-1 in the nightcap over the Titans, ranked 21st on National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 Poll.  UWL improves to 20-10 overall and 4-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Oshkosh drops to 20-6 overall and 4-2 in the conference. 

It marks the 10th straight season UWL has recorded at least 20 wins. 

Jessie Carignan (8-2) threw her third complete-game shutout in the opener.  She went 7.0 innings, allowing five hits and five walks while recording three strikeouts. UW-Oshkosh was shutout for the first time this season as the Titans advanced one runner to third base in the game.

Brittany Baldwin had five hits and three runs in Monday's doubleheader.


UWL took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Brittany Baldwin and Stephanie Cole singled with one out. After a pop-out for the second out of the inning, Grace Mindrup singled to score Baldwin and Cole for a 2-0 lead.  The Eagles added two runs in the bottom of the third. Baldwin singled with one out and stole second. She advanced to third on Cole's infield single. Ashley Lindstrom and Mindrup followed with back-to-back run-scoring singles for a 4-0 advantage. In the bottom of the fourth, Baldwin's infield single knocked in pinch-runner Brooke Baldwin to make it 5-0.   

UWL finished with nine hits in the opener as Brittany Baldwin and Cole each had three hits and two runs. Mindrup added two hits and three RBI. 

Sara Brunlieb (7-3) took the loss for UW-Oshkosh, going 3.0 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs with one strikeout. Five different players had a hit for the Titans. 

In the nightcap, UWL took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Lindstrom scored on Kathryn Vander Schaaf's single. The Eagles added two runs in the third inning for a 3-0 advantage as Mindrup's two-run single scored Brittany Baldwin and Cole. UW-Oshkosh cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth with an unearned run. UWL got the run right back in the bottom of the inning with pinch-runner Megan Andres scored on a wild pitch. 

Caitlyn Hughes (7-4) picked up the victory in the nightcap, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing two hits, one run (unearned) and one walk with six strikeouts. Katie Klein earned her sixth save of the season, pitching 1.0 inning, allowing two hits with one strikeout. With the save, Klein set an National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III record with her 25th career save. She broke the record of 24 held by Samantha Pratt (2009-12) of Keene State University (N.H.). 

UWL had nine hits in the second game with Brittany Baldwin and Mindrup each finishing 2-for-3. Mindrup had two RBI to give her five for the day.

Bailey Smaney (4-1) suffered the loss for UW-Oshkosh. She pitched 3.0 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs and one walk with one strikeout. Four different players had a hit for the Titans. 

UWL returns to action Tuesday, April 18 at UW-Eau Claire at 3 p.m.
