Mount Vernon, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team extended its winning streak to five with a 10-2 victory at Cornell College (Iowa) Sunday afternoon at Ash Park. The Eagles, ranked 11th on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, improve to 8-3 on the season while the Rams drop to 2-9. UWL completed a two-game series sweep after earning a 3-1 victory Saturday night.
Jameson Lavery (3-0) earned the win Sunday, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing six hits, two runs and two walks while striking out seven. He is now 17-4 in his four-year career at UWL, moving into a tie for fourth in school history in career victories.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning as
Alex Barnard scored on
Brennan Schmitt's RBI single to make it 1-0. Schmitt later scored on a Cornell (Iowa) fielding error for a 2-0 advantage. UWL added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to lead 5-0.
Alex Robson scored on RBI singles from Barnard in the third and fifth innings while
Sam Prissel came in on
Nate Heili's single in the fourth.
Cornell (Iowa) cut the deficit to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth, but UWL responded with two runs in the top of the sixth and added three runs in the top of the seventh. Robson had an RBI groundout and
Brady Stolzman an RBI single in the sixth for the Eagles. Heili's two-run double and
Nate Roethle's RBI double in the seventh made it 10-2.
UWL finished with a season-high 16 hits as seven starters recorded at least one. Barnard went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI while Roethle finished 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI. Heili finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI while Schmitt went 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, March 29 hosting Saint Mary's University (Minn.) in a non-conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. in the Eagles' home opener at Copeland Park.
