Mount Vernon, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a 3-1 victory at Cornell College (Iowa) Saturday night at Ash Park. The Eagles, ranked 11th on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, improve to 7-3 on the season while the Rams fall to 2-8 in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Cornell (Iowa) took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. TJ Rausch singled with one out and advanced to second on a UWL throwing error. Walker Breard followed with an RBI single to score Rausch for the first run of the game.
After leaving six runners on base in the first three innings of the game, UWL tied the game in the top of the fifth.
Joel Zyhowski reached on a fielding error top start the inning and then stole second. He advanced to third on
Nate Heili's groundout and scored on
Nate Roethle's sacrifice fly.
The Eagles took the lead in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs.
Sam Prissel reached first on a Cornell (Iowa) fielding error with one out and advanced to third on Zyhowski's single, who then advanced to second on wild pitch. Heili's sacrifice fly scored Prissel for a 2-1 lead with Zyhowski moving to third on the play. Roethle followed with a two-out single to knock in Zyhowski.
Caleb Boushley (3-1) earned the win for UWL, throwing his second complete-game of the season. He went 9.0 innings, allowing six hits, one run (unearned) and one walk with nine strikeouts. Boushley is 3-1 on the season with a 0.58 earned run average, allowing two earned runs in 31.0 innings.
Boushley is now 18-3 in his three-year career at UWL, moving into a tie for second in victories with
Jack Gurholt (1976-79).Â
Ben Cejka (2012-15) won a school record 19 career games.
UWL totaled six hits in the game as Roethle finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and Zyhowski went 2-for-5 with two runs.
Alex Brown finished 1-for-4.
Andy Dodson (1-1) suffered the loss for Cornell (Iowa), going 7.0 innings, allowing four hits, three runs (none earned) and five walks while striking out six. The Rams finished with four errors in the game as all four Eagles' runs were unearned.
The Rams finished with six hits as Rausch went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
UWL and Cornell (Iowa) will play another single game Sunday, March 26 with the first pitched scheduled for noon.
