Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team split a pair of games at the Tucson Invitational Friday. The Eagles, now 11-3 on the season, had their eight-game winning streak snapped with a 2-1 loss to Trinity University (Texas) before coming back to earn a 10-0 win (5 innings) over Dickinson College (Pa.).
Trinity (Texas) took a 1-0 lead in the top of third Friday on a two-out double and added to the lead in the fourth on a two-out RBI single. UWL cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth with
Brittany Baldwin scoring on
Sydney Murphy's sacrifice bunt.
Caitlyn Hughes (5-1) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out two.
Katie Klein went 2.0 innings with one strikeout.
The Eagles were held to three hits.
UWL scored five times in the top of the first and third innings in its win over Dickinson (Pa.) Friday.
Grace Mindrup's two-run home run highlighted the five-run first inning as the Eagles tallied five hits. UWL had six hits to score five runs in the third inning.
Jessie Carignan (4-0) earned the complete-game victory, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out two.
UWL had 12 hits with
Sarah Mueller finishing 3-for-3 and
Stephanie Cole 2-for-3. Eight of nine starters recorded a hit while seven scored a run.
UWL returns to action Saturday, March 18 facing Central College (Iowa) at 9 a.m. (Mountain Time) and Hamline University (Minn.) at 11 a.m. (Mountain).
