Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team extended its winning streak to six games with a pair of wins at the Tucson Invitational Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles, now 8-2 on the season, earned a 1-0 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.) and 5-1 win over Suffolk University (Mass.).
Caitlyn Hughes (4-0) earned the complete-game shutout in UWL's 1-0 win over Stevens (N.J.). She went 7.0 innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out six.
The Eagles scored the game's only run in the top of the seventh as
Sydney Murphy walked to start the inning and replaced by pinch-runner
Brooke Baldwin.
Ashley Lindstrom's sacrifice bunt moved Baldwin to second followed by a
Stephanie Cole single to advance Baldwin to third. After a pop-out for the second out, Baldwin came in on a Stevens (N.J.) wild pitch.
UWL was held to four hits with
Jenny Gallagher going 2-for-2.
Jessie Carignan (3-0) picked up the victory in UWL's 5-1 win over Suffolk (Mass.), pitching 4.0 innings, allowing six hits and one run.
Katie Klein earned her third save, going 3.0 innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out three.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the bottom the second on Carignan's double to score Cole and
Brittany Baldwin's RBI single to bring in Carignan.
Suffolk (Mass.) cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the third before UWL regained its two-run lead in the bottom of the fourth as
Brooke Baldwin scored on
Sarah Mueller's groundout.
The Eagles added two runs in the fifth inning on Murphy's single to score
Brittany Baldwin and Cole drawing a bases-loaded walk to bring in pinch-runner
Haley Gudmundson.
UWL had seven hits as
Brittany Baldwin finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, March 15 facing Greenville College (Ill.) at 9 a.m. (Mountain Time) and Eastern Connecticut State University at 11 a.m. (Mountain).
