UWL Earns Five Set Win at Saint Mary's

Winona, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team earned a 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 24-26, 25-22, 15-7) victory at Saint Mary's University (Minn.) Wednesday night.  The Eagles improve to 17-6 on the season while the Cardinals drop to 14-10. UWL, receiving votes on this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll, has now won 11 of its last 13 matches overall.

UWL took a 6-5 lead in the opening set when it went on a 7-4 run to lead 13-9. Saint Mary's (Minn.) later cut the lead to 21-20, but UWL scored four of the last five points to earn the victory. Stephanie Henk and Jessica Jablonski recorded back-to-back kills for the final two points of the set.

The Eagles led 13-9 in the second set when the Cardinals went on a 12-4 run to lead 21-17. UWL could get no closer than two points the rest of the set. Saint Mary's (Minn.) led 18-12 in the third set, but UWL forced a 20-20 tie on a Marisa Johnson ace. The set was tied 24-24 before a Tara Nagy kill and block assists from Rachel Kedl and Nagy for Saint Mary's gave the Cardinals the 2-1 advantage.

UWL scored the first five points of the fourth set, but Saint Mary's (Minn.) later tied it 14-14 on a Kedl kill. The Cardinals led 22-20 before the Eagles scored the final five points of the set, including three kills from Henk. Lakken Meredith had an ace and Madison Entinger recorded a kill for the final point of the set.

For the second straight set, UWL scored the first five points in the fifth and deciding set.  The Eagles never trailed in the set. Saint Mary's (Minn.) could get no closer than three points at 8-5.

Henk led UWL with 21 kills Wednesday night with Johnson finishing with 17 while hitting .333 (17-4-39).  Entinger recorded 54 assists as the Eagles hit .212 overall.

Halle Barnabo and Johnson led UWL with 19 digs with Entinger recording 13.  UWL totaled 4.0 team blocks.

Brandi Blattner led Saint Mary's (Minn.) with 11 kills while Kedl finished with 10.  Lillian Braun had 22 assists and Brittany Hanson 19 as the Cardinals hit .181 for the match.

Blattner led the team with 19 digs while Braun and Clare Tack each had 17. Saint Mary's (Minn.) had 9.0 team blocks.

UWL returns to action Wednesday, October 25 hosting seventh-ranked UW-Whitewater at 7 p.m.
