Herzog Scores Winning Goal In Home Victory

Kennedy Brault recorded her second straight shutout Thursday night.
Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team earned a 1-0 win over The College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.  UWL improves to 3-1 on the season while St. Scholastica (Minn.) falls to 1-3-2.

In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, Natalie Herzog scored the only goal of the game at 29:29 assisted by Megan Carroll.  It was Herzog's second goal of the season, both of which have been the game winner for the Eagles.

"It was a good test, St. Scholastica played a style that is always challenging for us", said UWL head coach Jason Murphy.  "They battled hard and were physical, a credit to them.  When we were able to move the ball, switch the point and be creative we had some success.  We need to be better in the final third, but we are happy with the result."

The Eagles totaled a season-high 30 shots in the game, including 11 on goal. UWL held the St. Scholastica (Minn.) to five shots in the game and three on goal.  Alex Cording led UWL with six shots (two on goal) while Herzog and Haley Hartkemeyer added five shots each.  Becca Rancour had two shots (one on goal) to lead St. Scholastica (Minn.).

Kennedy Brault earned her second consecutive shutout victory for UWL with three saves.  It is her eighth career shutout.

The Eagles have allowed two goals in four matches this season, recording a 0.50 goals against average.  Opponents are averaging 4.0 shots on goal.

"This group works very hard in everyday in training, and it has shown in our results so far early in the season," added Murphy.  "Tonight, a lot of our players did good things, and I thought Alex Graeber came off the bench and did a great job of challenging defenders and taking players on."

UWL, ranked seventh in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) North Region, returns to action Saturday, September 17 at Augustana College (Ill.) at 1 p.m.  Augustana (Ill.) is ranked 21st in the NSCAA National Poll and third in the NSCAA Central Region.
